Hypebeast Community Center: Tótem Tienda

Give us the Tótem Tienda elevator pitch.

Initially, Tótem Store was an offshoot of Tótem Magazine, a venture I initiated in Mexico City to exhibit a distinctive perspective on fashion that embraces diversity in body types, gender identities, and self-expression. The brands we collaborate with are innovative, eco-friendly, and thoughtful about sustainability; essentially, we cherish those who think globally and act responsibly.

The Five Ws

Who is wearing Tótem Tienda?

Creative people who want to stand out and appreciate the art behind the clothes.

What is Tótem Tienda’s main message?

It’s all about community and uniqueness. Why blend in when you can be yourself?

When did you launch Tótem Tienda?

In my journey as a gamer, I’ve taken on a new challenge – establishing a showroom in bustling LA after moving to the U.S. This haven of mine became a platform for displaying the exceptional works of Latinx and Mexican designers, fostering a unique ecosystem that helped them connect with a broader, global audience.

Just as the pandemic (2020) hit, I opened my doors, but we navigated through this challenge by operating on an appointment-only basis. This approach not only ensured safety but also kept our interactions warm and personalized.

Where are people wearing Tótem Tienda?

Everywhere—on the streets, at parties, in the nightlife.

Why was Tótem Tienda created?

To give new designers a platform and an opportunity to showcase their work.

Can you discuss the relationship between the Tótem Tienda pop-up and your magazine?

Tótem Magazine consistently showcases individuals, tales, and endeavors that motivate us. Given our role as a fashion publication, I aimed to assist budding designers by offering their creations for sale within the magazine.

Could you elaborate on why the Tótotem platform chose to incorporate the identities of Los Angeles, New York City, and Mexico City into its brand identity?

I’ve resided in these cities and found myself surrounded by creative minds. New York City has always been my aspiration, but the concept I adore is building connections that serve as inspirational bridges among us all.

How does your heritage from Mexico City impact the variety of products at Tótem Tienda and its cultural perspective? Are there unique influences from Los Angeles or New York that also shape your vision in any way?

Raised in Mexico City, we were continually impacted by American trends – television shows, music, fashion. However, what truly sets us apart is our ability to adapt and innovate when resources are scarce, which fosters creativity and originality. This unique blend of influences, coupled with our rich cultural heritage, gives Tótem Tienda its distinctive character.

As a passionate admirer of Mexican culture, could you delve deeper into how the vibrant Mexican fashion world interacts with the nation’s global community and its diaspora, influencing and being influenced by them in return?

Mexico’s geographical position and past richness in cultural diversity allow for an incredible fusion of influences, with Asia playing a significant role, alongside the U.S. and Europe. Yet, what truly stands out is our growing appreciation for our own roots, which can be seen clearly in modern Mexican fashion. We’re blending it all together to create something fresh and captivating.

As a devoted admirer, let me share with you the principles that drive my brand selection at Tótem Store. Does Tótem Store have its unique style? Absolutely! If I were to put it into words, here’s how I would describe the distinctive Tótem Store aesthetic:

Our curation is a harmonious blend of contemporary and timeless designs, where we prioritize quality over quantity. We seek out brands that not only resonate with modern sensibilities but also carry an element of enduring elegance. Our selection caters to those who appreciate the beauty in simplicity, yet value thoughtful details that elevate everyday essentials into artisanal pieces. At Tótem Store, we believe in fostering a space where design meets functionality, creating a lifestyle that is both stylish and practical.

Without a doubt, global movements significantly shape my choices, which is evident in the selection of brands. Some of these brands have been part of Tótem since its inception. I’d describe the aesthetic as a blend of diverse elements, always keeping an eye on creativity, quality, and that unique touch.

If you were to create an ensemble reflecting the current ethos of Tótem Tienda, which brands do you envision being featured? Are there particular items that immediately come to mind as particularly noteworthy?

1) Paloma Lira stands out as a significant figure due to her consistent transformation, which is why she embodies the essence of a true fashion legend. Similarly, Ese Chico, a photography project by Dorian Ulises Macias, deserves mention – his work beautifully captures the raw and breathtaking beauty of Mexico.

Do you know of any notable Mexican fashion brands or designers who have Mexican roots, currently gaining attention? And what about internationally recognized ones from around the globe?

Willy Chavarría is truly excelling, and we couldn’t be prouder! Campillo, while influenced by Europe, maintains a powerful Mexican identity in their creations. And don’t forget to watch my brother Rio from The Rio World – he’s incredibly gifted, and I’m eagerly waiting for his next journey.

As a former designer, would you ever consider introducing a Tótem collection?

Lately, I’ve found myself pondering over something interesting – a collaborative project! Together with the talented Mexican artist José Cespedes, we’ve been developing a special capsule collection, which we aim to unveil this coming summer season.

1. How has the system evolved over the past ten years?

2. What fundamental values do you wish to maintain while progressing in the future? (This one maintains the original question’s structure but uses more conversational language.)

My convictions have consistently been robust, as a Taurus, once I commit to something, it takes quite an effort to change my stance! I’m eager to collaborate more with prestigious fashion brands, aiming to develop sophisticated, lively editorials that infuse the essence of Tótem into a broader sphere. However, I’ll always ensure to accommodate emerging initiatives and fresh perspectives.

Are there plans for Tótem Tienda or Tótem Magazine in the near future that you’d like to share?

Currently, we’re carrying on with the pop-up events at 168 Ludlow, thanks to Assembly New York for their backing. In addition, we’re looking forward to launching our third magazine issue this autumn, and we’re consistently posting fresh interviews and engaging stories on our website each month.
