As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with a soft spot for offbeat comedies, I must say Megan Park’s “My Old Ass” is a delightful blend of coming-of-age tales, sci-fi fantasy, and Aubrey Plaza’s captivating performance. The film’s unique premise, where Elliott meets her older self, was both relatable and refreshingly original, making it stand out from the crowd.
Heads up! If you haven’t watched “My Old Ass” on Amazon Prime yet, you might want to skip this as I’m about to dish out some major spoilers for this quirky comedy. Enjoy the surprise if you decide to stream it!
In a surprising contrast to its humorous title, Megan Park’s 2024 film “My Old Ass” offers a delightful blend of comedy and drama in a heartwarming tale about growing up and self-discovery, also serving as a teenage coming-out narrative infused with a touch of cautionary sci-fi elements. I was captivated by Maisy Stella’s portrayal of college-bound Elliott from the Nashville series, alongside Aubrey Plaza who plays an older version of the character, navigating separate yet intertwined journeys.
Despite my age bracket being significantly different from Elliott’s, I found My Old Ass remarkably relatable and its message about living in the present was as heartwarming and endearing as any comedy moral in 2024. However, a scene that might not resonate with everyone is its most eccentrically absurd kiss scene, which, surprisingly, isn’t even the most shocking on-screen smooch for an Aubrey Plaza character in 2024.
Elliott Kissing An Older Version Of Herself Is Pretty Weird And Unique
In the film, “My Old Ass,” the main storyline centers around the character Elliott, played by Plaza, who finds herself inexplicably traveling back in time to converse with her younger self, who has consumed psychedelic mushrooms. Later in the movie, Older Elliott also partakes in marijuana. Their first encounter, as portrayed, seemed incredibly authentic, from the initial skepticism to immediate discussions about potential benefits for gaming or financial gains.
Indeed, Elliott’s later interest in exploring what it feels like to kiss herself can be considered as part of “understandable or familiar impulses.” Personally, I don’t remember experimenting with kissing myself in front of a mirror, but I have no qualms about those who have. If the scene had turned into an intense makeout session, it might have felt slightly out of place for me, but it was certainly the most family-friendly kiss in the film.
This situation isn’t commonly depicted in many films or series that I’m aware of, excluding perhaps some spin-offs of ‘Timecop’. Nevertheless, it bears resemblance to scenes in ‘Bill & Ted’, and there seems to be an unspoken reference to cannabis use off-camera. However…
It’s Still Not As Weird And Unique As Aubrey Plaza’s Big Kiss In Agatha All Along
Spoilers below for Agatha All Along for anyone who hasn’t yet streamed the season with a Disney+ subscription.
There’s nothing more unique than a person momentarily sharing a kiss with their own future, or even Death giving a kiss to the world’s strongest witch – these scenarios are truly exceptional and outshine the whole confectionery shop.
It’s worth noting that when Plaza appeared in the premiere of ‘Agatha’, it wasn’t just a simple introduction. Instead, her character was introduced through a hallucination, but not from drug use like psilocybin. This is different from how the MCU series ‘My Old Ass’ introduced its characters. Unlike ‘My Old Ass’, ‘Agatha’ didn’t reveal Rio and Agatha’s past relationship immediately, choosing to hint at it subtly for the first seven episodes. However, despite being a secret, Rio’s true identity wasn’t exactly a mystery – as Funko had already given it away.
In the penultimate episode, instead of continuing with the Death reveal, there was a long-anticipated showdown between Rio and Agatha. However, it wasn’t until a physical altercation ensued that Kathryn Hahn’s seemingly invincible witch took an unexpected action – she chose to sacrifice herself by passionately kissing Rio, thus transferring death magic into Agatha, ultimately leading to her demise. I bet we all have tales remarkably similar, with a twist or two here and there.
It would not have been suitable for Megan Park’s movie if Elliott had killed Stella’s Elliott with that kiss, as it could have broken the boundaries of believability. A more fitting title under such circumstances could be “My Old Paradoxical Self“.
In the movie “Megalopolis” by Francis Ford Coppola, Aubrey Plaza’s character name, Wow Platinum, Rio, and Older Elliott, will be noteworthy in 2024. Hear, hear for Wow Platinum! Hear, hear for Rio! Hear, hear for Older Elliott!
