‘I Am In Awe Of Them’: His Three Daughters Filmmaker Shares Sweet Way He Pays Tribute To Hospice Nurses In The Elizabeth Olsen Movie

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I can confidently say that the real-life drama unfolding in “His Three Daughters” is a game-changer. The emotional depth and raw authenticity of this movie are unlike anything I’ve experienced in my gaming life or otherwise.

In a highly anticipated Netflix release this weekend, the actresses Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne, and Carrie Coon star as three remarkable sisters in the film titled “His Three Daughters“. Set in 2024, this critically acclaimed movie follows the story of estranged siblings who reunite to care for their ailing father, who is admitted into hospice at the start of the film. In an interview with TopMob, director Azazel Jacobs discussed how the movie honors and pays tribute to the tireless work of hospice nurses worldwide.

Although hospice care isn’t often portrayed in movies, it’s a growing experience for many families, as there were approximately 1.8 million hospice users projected for 2024, according to the University of Pennsylvania (compared to just 500,000 in 2000). During my chat with Azazel Jacobs from the film “His Three Daughters”, he discussed how he aimed to shed light on this process through his dramedy. In his own words:

As a person deeply moved by the existence of hospice nurses, I find myself inexplicably naming one of my characters ‘Angel’. It’s almost as if these individuals were hidden gems waiting to be discovered. I am immensely grateful for their existence and the work they do, especially in times when the world seems chaotic. They embody a level of compassion, understanding, and humanity that is truly awe-inspiring.

‘I Am In Awe Of Them’: His Three Daughters Filmmaker Shares Sweet Way He Pays Tribute To Hospice Nurses In The Elizabeth Olsen Movie

Actresses Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne, and Carrie Coon share anecdotes from their theater days, and honestly, I’d be captivated by their conversation for hours.

The filmmaker mentioned that he deliberately chose to call the lead hospice nurse in his movie “Angel” as a tribute to the deep respect he holds for those who work in this field. Hospice caregivers provide comfort and alleviate the distress of terminally ill patients and their families, often demonstrating immense patience and empathy towards the complex emotions they experience during their final moments.

In the film, strained relationships develop among three sisters as they navigate their father’s deteriorating health during his stay at a hospice facility. Prior to this, Natasha Lyonne’s character Rachel had been managing and coping with his illness on a daily basis. On the other hand, Elizabeth Olsen’s Christina and Carrie Coon’s Katie only recently arrived to spend precious moments with their ailing father.

The newly-arrived duo soon begin to dispute about matters concerning Rachel, such as her habit of smoking marijuana and her decision not to have their father sign a Do Not Resuscitate order when he was alert. As the film progresses, the three sisters face their shared struggles head-on.

In the creative process, Azazel Jacobs specifically crafted the film with Olsen, Lyonne, and Coon in mind, as he felt confident that their unique styles and delivery would bring his vision to life effectively. Indeed, they did not disappoint, resulting in a nearly flawless 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, solidifying the movie as one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2024.
