I Binge-Watched The Umbrella Academy Season 4, And I Think The Short Season Really Hurt Its Ending

As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher who’s seen more shows than I can count on my fingers (and toes), let me tell you that The Umbrella Academy has been one of the most captivating rides on Netflix. The final season, despite its brevity, was an emotional rollercoaster that left me both satisfied and yearning for more.

Spoilers ahead for the final season of The Umbrella Academy.

For quite some time now, the streaming wars have been underway, and among the most captivating series to marathon on Netflix is undeniably their superhero production titled “The Umbrella Academy“. The fourth and concluding season of this show has just dropped for those with a Netflix membership, delivering a heartfelt conclusion to the Hargreeves family.

The final episode of “The Umbrella Academy” made it clear, though perhaps we should have suspected it all along – the Hargreeves are the driving force behind their persistent efforts to avert the apocalypse. In the finale of Season 4, the team chose to make a selfless sacrifice, ensuring that they and their loved ones (along with every being across the multiverse) could continue living. Although I enjoyed the ending, I felt that the short season left me wanting more from the series as a whole.

In simpler terms, the first three seasons of “The Umbrella Academy” consisted of ten episodes each, providing ample room for the narrative to unfold. With numerous characters involved and many of them frequently traversing through different timelines, this structure worked well. However, reducing the number of episodes to six in Season 4 seemed abrupt and rushed, forcing the storyline to progress at a faster pace than it likely would have otherwise.

As viewers adapted to the shorter episodes in Season 2 of “The Umbrella Academy”, skipping four episodes for the final season proved challenging. Despite a satisfying conclusion to the series, the impact might have been stronger if there had been additional time to delve deeper into each cherished character’s storyline.

My biggest complaint as far as these characters go for Season 4 definitely has to be the storyline involving Five and Lila. This pair end up being lost in the multiverse subway lines for years, bonding deeply and even getting romantic during this time helping keep each other alive and sane.

The part of the show centered around that plot was stunningly done, with a particularly moving montage as the pair explored the subway system while “Ahead of the Century” by Tragically Hip played. Personally, I felt it could have delved deeper into the aftermath of their relationship and the emotional turmoil they endured.

In the last episode, Five and Lila found themselves back in their original universe, leaving their friends oblivious to their adventures through time. Eventually, they shared what had transpired, disclosing the time gap and their bond. During the climactic fight, Five and Diego ended up clashing violently.

As the clock was running out and the group choosing to give their lives, they had to promptly address this matter before meeting their untimely end. I found this resolution felt hastily done and I wished there was an extra episode inserted to fully explore everything. Additionally, it would have been fascinating to see the siblings interact with Ben’s monstrous shape instead of just Viktor in that moment. However, even though it was rushed, the series finale still left me content overall.

The Umbrella Academy is streaming in its entirety now. Check out the TV premiere list to plan your next binge watch, including upcoming Netflix shows and movies.
