I Can’t Get Over The Last Of Us Season 2’s Ending, But Mainly Because Of How Unintentionally Funny It Was

❗️Heads up! This discussion involves the climax of The Last of Us Season 2. If you’re a Max subscriber, feel free to watch and read further, but beware of potential spoilers!

The second season of The Last Of Us has concluded, leaving us all hanging with an intriguing cliffhanger that keeps our minds buzzing until Season 3 arrives. Regrettably, I wasn’t fully immersed during the finale since I found myself in fits of laughter over what could be some of the most unexpectedly humorous scenes from a well-regarded series in quite some time.

2025 TV lineup hasn’t managed to evoke the hearty laughter I experienced during the climactic scenes of “The Last of Us.” Frankly, it’s a letdown because I had expected something as moving and unexpected. The finale left me dabbing away tears of joy, rewinding the episode just to ensure the poignancy of its ending wasn’t lost on me.

Ellie’s Big Cliffhanger Scene Didn’t Land With Me The Way It Should’ve

I hadn’t played “The Last Of Us” before, so I was taken aback when Ellie had a gun pointed at her by Abby, and it seemed like she might perish. I’m unsure about the fate of this character, but I hope she lives on because I can’t fathom the reasoning behind how her supposed last scene unfolded in such an unexpected manner.

Instead of sharing the specific moment due to copyright issues and its recentness, let me tell you about my reaction when Ellie exclaimed “No, no, no” and the screen went black. It was so hilarious that the first thought that popped into my mind was that famous meme featuring Jon Bernthal’s character, Frank Castle, panicking while seated in a chair.

I’d rather not dwell on that, as it’s my last image of Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us. However, speculation about a possible Season 4 suggests she might be around for much longer. There’s hope for her character to find redemption, though I can’t say the same for HBO, which could face a new competitor for the most cringe-worthy scene since the infamous scene shift in The Sopranos.

I Feel Like The Internet Is To Blame For My Broken Sense Of Humor

I believe The Last of Us could have benefited from a reevaluation during a crucial scene, given the prevalence of meme culture today. Though sudden edits in filming have historically been employed for intense cliffhangers, they seem to be overused nowadays to heighten laughter in viral videos. For instance, the video ends just as someone’s head hits a garage door or when someone lets out a scream.

I truly wished I could have felt as engaged with Ellie and Abby’s confrontation as I did with Joel’s comeback in the previous episode. Regrettably, I fear that moment will always lack the impact it should due to my impaired mind and the ironic humor often found online. Here’s hoping I can overcome this sentiment before Season 3 begins, especially since they might revisit that scene during the recap just before the premiere airs.

You can now watch both Seasons of “The Last Of Us” on HBO Max. I’m wondering if I’m alone in finding Ellie’s significant scene a little off-putting, or if others share my perspective that what was intended to be a very impactful moment fell short.
