I Couldn’t Get Enough Of That Wild Amazing Race 37 Finish, And It Turns Out A Rarely Discussed Rule Helped One Team Cope With What Happened

Throughout its run, “The Amazing Race” has provided numerous thrilling finishes at the mat. Last week, this season offered another exciting one when Jeff & Pops lost a footrace to Phil Keoghan’s host position against brothers Nick & Mike. The unfortunate incident occurred as Jeff and Pops missed their train by mere seconds, giving Nick and Mike the opportunity to board the same train. A heart-wrenching moment ensued as Jeff unsuccessfully attempted to reach out and stop the closing door. However, it was later revealed that due to an infrequently mentioned rule on “The Amazing Race,” they were not as close to catching the train as it seemed.

On The Amazing Race, it’s common to see teams rushing to meet different departure times. However, it’s not just the teams that need to make these deadlines; their camera crews must also arrive on time or else the teams can’t move forward. In this instance, they weren’t too far from Jeff & Pops, but considering that Jeff would have had to hold the train for himself, then for Pops, and finally for the camera crew, offered some comfort to the team that was eliminated, as they rewatched the episode. During an interview with Gold Derby, this is what they shared…

Reflecting on the ending, it was truly thrilling. With time passing, some events still linger, but viewing things from another angle provided a sense of relief. It made us understand that we wouldn’t have managed to board the train under those circumstances anyway. As we approached the door, questioning where the platform was, I wish I had reached for it and pulled it open. However, given the situation, the crew got the shot they needed, and none of them would have made it on the train either. In essence, all four of us would have missed the train if we were trying to board at that moment, which is why it didn’t happen.

During the Amazing Race episode, there was no mention of the camera team joining the contestants on the train, which is unusual for this long-running reality show. Usually, such discussions only occur if it significantly impacts the show’s outcome. Last season, we saw an exception when a team had to wait in their car because their crew got lost, and the show attributed it to the racers not ensuring their crew was with them. However, many viewers felt this wasn’t fair as they believed the crew’s loss should have been the producers’ responsibility.

In this instance, I don’t hold the same feelings you expressed earlier. If Pops and Jeff had boarded the train, waited briefly because their team wasn’t yet present, and then had to disembark, I would have certainly voiced my frustration loudly. However, in this situation, it appears that wasn’t what happened. You see, the crew typically trails the team by a few seconds as they need to follow them to capture their actions on camera. Thus, waiting for a reasonable amount of time is simply part of the gameplay guidelines.

Luckily, Pops and Jeff appear unfazed by the turn of events. Being rivals, it’s no surprise they wished to remain longer in the competition, but their enthusiasm for the experience was evident. They had the chance to explore numerous stunning countries, share memorable moments, and even threw the first pitch at a St. Louis Cardinals game recently. It was a pleasure to witness their journey, and I’m relieved that they’ve handled what transpired so positively.

Right now, The Amazing Race Season 37 is being broadcast every Wednesday on CBS. This season has introduced several fresh twists in the gameplay and rules. Additionally, it’s been confirmed that they’re already planning for another season, with rumors suggesting they’re considering former Big Brother contestants – which sounds like it will be quite exciting!
