‘I Didn’t Have Such A Great Experience With Her’: Emmy Winner Claims Betty White ‘Fat-Shamed’ Her Years Ago

Betty White, who passed away in 2022 at age 99, garnered an exceptional level of recognition within Hollywood. During her career, she interacted with numerous other prominent actors, including Sally Struthers – the Emmy-winning actress known for portraying Gloria Stivic on All in the Family. More recently, Struthers shared a story about her meeting with White, stating that it was less than pleasant and further claimed that she felt “body-shamed” by White.

77-year-old Sally Struthers recently appeared as a guest on Let’s Talk About That! with Larry Saperstein and Jacob Bellotti. During their conversation, Struthers delved into various topics, one of which was her career experiences. In particular, she reminisced about her time working alongside Bea Arthur. Struthers also shared an interesting tidbit about how she used to reside near the exterior filming location for The Golden Girls’ house. Towards the end of the YouTube video, Struthers transitioned the discussion to Betty White, offering her thoughts on the cherished actress.

Let me take a moment to discuss Betty White, who unfortunately is no longer with us. Everyone adores her, and the affection was so immense that they even petitioned for her to host Saturday Night Live. I understand this, but my personal encounter with her wasn’t as positive; she came across as rather passive-aggressive.

Later on, a former 9-to-5 employee reminisced about a particular occasion when she went to the home of another 9-to-5 alum for work-related reasons. It was during this visit that Betty White is said to have made a comment about her colleague’s weight in front of others.

On one occasion, we visited her home to collaborate on a concept for a novel game program. During our conversation about the show’s aspects, she requested her maid to serve us some refreshments. The platter appeared in the center of our gathering, and it seemed like cookies, though I’m not entirely sure. As I picked one up, she publicly remarked, “Oh, I wouldn’t suggest that if I were you, dear. You don’t require a cookie.” In front of everyone, she subtly body-shamed me, and I felt a pang of discomfort, thinking to myself, ‘That’s not very kind.’

To be fair, Betty White isn’t able to respond or confirm statements made by Sally Struthers. However, most people would likely concur that criticizing someone based on their physical appearance is wrong. Over the years, there has been much discussion about this type of shaming, particularly within the entertainment industry. For instance, in 2024, Kim Rhodes from Suite Life of Zack & Cody remembered being protected from a fat-shaming joke by her co-star Dylan Sprouse at that time. Netflix also addressed backlash related to fat-shaming in 2018 regarding the show Insatiable. In summary, many have made it clear that they won’t tolerate such behavior.
