More than two decades since its debut, “Hannah Montana” continues to be a beloved pop culture icon among fans, who can revisit it with a Disney+ subscription. The series’ influence on the entertainment world catapulted Miley Cyrus into becoming the youngest celebrity honored as a Disney Legend. Even though she’s experienced various phases and challenges with fame following the show’s conclusion, both “Hannah Montana” and her Hannah persona hold significant value for the singer of “Something Beautiful.” However, there is at least one aspect of the Disney series that Miley Cyrus would alter if given the chance.
Among the many great aspects of “Hannah Montana,” one that truly stands out is Miley Cyrus’ real-life singing and performing abilities. Not only did she don wigs and costumes for concerts, but she was also involved in penning some of Hannah’s most popular songs. Her efforts to mature the character were initially unsuccessful, which led her to contribute more of her own voice to the role.
On the “Every Single Album” podcast, Cyrus expressed that she regrets not acting swiftly enough to ensure her work was legally acknowledged. Simply put, in her own terms, she wished she had acted more promptly to secure recognition for her contributions.
Initially, I didn’t realize I deserved songwriting credit as I thought being Hannah Montana was enough recognition since the show and its music belonged to me. However, upon reflection, I feel I should have received more credit for helping shape the identity of the character and writing songs based on my own experiences.
Fans of “Hannah Montana” are aware that the show features some deeply personal songs. While Cyrus mentioned that certain tracks were created for specific episodes or storylines, there are undoubtedly others that offer a glimpse into her real life experiences. Her initial reluctance to claim songwriting credits can be understood as she was a young star on the rise, thinking that playing Hannah Montana was enough to secure success.
As a devoted movie-goer, I can’t help but acknowledge the significant impact “Meet Miley Cyrus” had on us. The captivating second album of Hannah Montana, titled “Hannah Montana 2,” was not only a double album but also showcased ten songs penned and sung by none other than Miley herself. These songs were born from the heartache of a breakup, allowing her to be unabashedly authentic in her artistry.
Although Hannah’s character couldn’t delve into more mature storytelling through the lyrics, Miley stepping forward with her own music served as an outlet for self-expression. It gave us a glimpse into her true essence, even if it was only a tantalizing taste.
Despite Hannah Montana’s squeaky-clean persona and Miley Cyrus’ attempts to make her seem more mature, it’s clear that this role has held significant meaning for her throughout the years. As evidenced by the emotional letter she wrote on the show’s 15th anniversary, she remains deeply connected to Hannah Montana and sees herself as an integral part of that character.
It’s astonishing to think that Lucy Hale and Aly Michalka almost landed the main role in Hannah Montana, and it’s equally intriguing to ponder how different the series might have been if Miley Cyrus hadn’t convinced the executives. It would have been fascinating to witness a more mature Hannah Montana initially, but maybe a future reboot could offer that opportunity, although it’s not currently slated for 2025 TV.
