As a seasoned movie buff with a soft spot for musicals and a particular fondness for adaptations that breathe new life into beloved stories, I can confidently say that “Wicked” has truly enchanted audiences and left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape of 2024. The film’s captivating blend of magical storytelling, breathtaking visual effects, and a star-studded cast has elevated it to the status of modern classic.
Director Jon M. Chu has done an exceptional job in translating the enchanting world of Oz from stage to screen, while respectfully stepping back to allow Stephen Schwartz his creative space. This decision, though it may have led to a slight disparity between the film’s soundtrack and certain fan expectations, ultimately resulted in a cinematic experience that truly showcases the rhythmic nature of musicals and the interplay between movement and music – a testament to Chu’s passion for the art form.
One can only imagine what Jon M. Chu’s version of the soundtrack would have sounded like, with its dialogue-filled audio tracks that might just have fans belting along on bus rides across the land! But alas, we shall never know, and that is part of the charm of this magical production.
In closing, I must say that “Wicked” has left me spellbound, and I eagerly await the release of “Wicked: For Good,” which promises to continue the enchanting tale of Elphaba and Glinda in a way only Jon M. Chu and his team could bring to life. And as I look forward to the Oscars, where I’m certain “Wicked” will sweep the categories for Best Musical, Best Director, and Best Costume Design (just to name a few), I can’t help but wonder if Ariana Grande might grace us with her presence on the red carpet. One can only hope that she dons a dress as green as her voice during “For Good!
2024 has seen “Wicked-mania” ruling both box office returns and broader pop culture, with no signs of abating. Households can now either buy or rent “Wicked” for home viewing, and the sequel, titled “Wicked: For Good,” is slated for release towards the end of 2025’s movie calendar. The film adaptation has gained such popularity that many fans of the original musical find themselves appreciating certain aspects of the film over the stage production. This preference extends to the incorporation of atmospheric sounds and effects within the songs, and when these elements didn’t make it to the final soundtrack, there was a minor uproar among fans. However, don’t hold director Jon M. Chu responsible for this, as he appears to share the same sentiments as the disgruntled fans.
During my chat with Jon M. Chu to mark the home video launch of Wicked, I raised certain fan concerns about the soundtrack, and surprisingly, he swiftly distanced himself from any responsibility regarding it. It appears that while he played a significant role in mixing the film itself, his involvement in the soundtrack’s mixing was minimal.
I understand your perspective, but I’ve learned over the years that keeping promises is crucial in any collaboration. I made a commitment to Stephen Schwartz regarding the album, and I intend to honor it by giving him creative control and staying out of his way. In return, he agreed to steer clear of the movie production, allowing me the freedom to do my thing. We each have our unique interpretation of the project, which is what makes it exciting and worthwhile. I’ve found that in life, trusting others with their expertise often leads to great results.
It’s unlikely that director Jon M. Chu is planning to criticize Stephen Schwartz, an accomplished composer. Given his close involvement with the film itself, it might be challenging for him to evaluate the soundtrack objectively since he isn’t a composer himself. As a multitalented individual who excels in filmmaking, dancing, and choreography, Chu may simply be planning to incorporate the movie’s audio, including dialogue, into his version of the soundtrack, reflecting his deep affection for Wicked.
However, it’s not only my personal opinion; Jon M. Chu articulates a similar sentiment regarding the purpose of this unique soundtrack. He believes it should transcend the role of merely a compilation of tunes.
In my opinion, musicals should have a lively and immediate feel. I particularly enjoy the dance-like quality of the choreography, as it seems to be an integral part of the music itself. While some songwriters prefer a more polished, album-like sound, I personally appreciate it when the music seems to be happening right here, right now.
As a lifelong fan of musical theater and a devoted admirer of the “Wicked” story, I was absolutely thrilled to hear that Ariana Grande was taking on the role of Glinda in the film adaptation. Having grown up listening to the original Broadway cast recording, I couldn’t wait to see how this modern interpretation would compare.
While I must admit that the film did not quite live up to my lofty expectations when it came to immersive atmospheric sounds, there were still several moments that truly captured the magic of “Wicked” for me. One such moment was during the soundtrack version of “Popular,” where Ariana Grande’s powerful vocals brought the iconic line “Right!” to life in a way that I had never experienced before.
I found myself on a bus full of fellow “Wicked” enthusiasts, and as we collectively belted out the lyrics, it was clear that this film had struck a chord with us all. The addition of the book slamming sound effect during this particular scene added an extra layer of authenticity that truly resonated with me.
During a recent interview, I had the opportunity to speak with director Jon M. Chu about this very moment, and the look of pure joy on his face as he discussed its impact on the “Wicked” legacy was priceless. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love musical theater so much – it has the power to transport us to another world and bring people together in a way that few other forms of entertainment can.
In short, while the film may not have been perfect, it still managed to capture the essence of “Wicked” in ways that were truly magical for me as a fan. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this beloved musical and its talented cast and crew!
Apart from what I’ve already shared about this movie, let me tell you that our review awarded it a flawless 5 out of 5 stars, and the praise just keeps pouring in from critics. With Jon M. Chu hinting at a sequel and the upcoming Oscars, as well as the release of “Wicked: For Good,” it appears the buzz around this film is here to stay. You can catch it right now by renting or buying it for home viewing!
