As a gamer who’s been through countless cinematic adventures, I must say that the recent turn of events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been nothing short of exhilarating! Chris Evans returning as Johnny Storm after hanging up his Captain America shield is like finding an old friend in a new game.
This article contains major spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine, so read on at your own discretion.
It appears that Chris Evans retired his Captain America uniform following his final performance as Steve Rogers in the 2019 movie “Avengers: Endgame”. However, the engaging actor made a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, set for 2024 releases, due to Shawn Levy’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” and Ryan Reynolds himself. If you haven’t checked out Chris Evans’ impressive behind-the-scenes posts from the set of “DP3”, he once again donned the flaming boots of Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, reprising his character from the Fox-produced “Fantastic Four” films. Lately, he has been more forthcoming about his return and the challenging monologue he had to deliver, which Reynolds jokingly offered to assist with.
In an interview with People, the actor who once played Knives Out’s leading role shared that Ryan Reynolds approached him about two years ago to reprise his role as Storm. During their private conversation, Reynolds described the opportunity which included wearing “that” distinctive suit (you know the one). As Captain Evans, he expressed it:
As a die-hard fan, let me tell you honestly, if Ryan asked me to jump off a cliff (hopefully not literally!), I’d consider it without hesitation. He gave me an unforgettable cameo in Free Guy, and that experience only solidified my trust in him. So when he offered the chance to reprise the role of Johnny, I jumped at it without a second thought. It was an absolute blast to be part of, both during filming and watching the final product.
Additionally, it’s evident that audiences were just as enthused, given that Deadpool & Wolverine is shattering Marvel’s box office records. This success can be attributed in part to the fantastic cameos provided by Ryan Reynolds and the standout moment where Chris Evans had to employ some words that would make Captain America himself embarrassed.
Throughout the film, Wade Wilson instigated Johnny Storm’s demise when he revealed to the villain Cassandra Nova that the Fantastic Four member had ridiculed her. Storm protested his innocence, while Wilson maintained that he hadn’t fabricated the whole incident. However, for those who waited until the end credits, there was an intriguing extra scene revealing Wade’s exoneration. A recording surfaced, proving that Chris Evans’ character Johnny had indeed made a hilarious speech filled with profanities and adult humor. It turned out that Ryan Reynolds had jokingly advised Evans on how to deliver the dialogue, advice Evans refused.
Ryan suggested, “If we require prompt cards…”, and I responded, “Prompt cards? I’ll be memorized.”
As a die-hard fan, it was exhilarating for me to bring such lively dialogue to life in Snowpiercer. Jumping back into the jovial character of Johnny Storm felt like coming home, and I embraced the mature, humorous vibe of the Deadpool films wholeheartedly. To top it off, here’s a quote straight from my heart: “Bringing these lines to life was an unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait for you all to see it!”
As someone who has spent years honing my craft and immersing myself in the world of dialogue, I can confidently say that I rarely get to deliver lines like this. But let me tell you, every fiber of my being is buzzing with anticipation at the prospect of bringing these words to life. I’ve committed them to memory, and I can hardly wait to sink my teeth into each and every second of it. The thrill of performance, the connection with my audience, the satisfaction of a job well done – these are the moments that have made my journey as an actor worthwhile. And this role? This role is going to be one for the history books.
Right now, you have the opportunity to watch “Deadpool & Wolverine” at your local cinema. If you’re in the mood for some old-school fun, why not stream the initial two “Fantastic Four” films on Disney+?
