As a seasoned gamer and longtime Disney enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of animated masterpieces – from classic tales to modern marvels. The original Moana was undeniably one of the latter, with its captivating storyline and catchy soundtrack that had me humming “How Far I’ll Go” for weeks on end.
Disney is known for its beloved animated blockbuster movies, including golden era titles like Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King. But there’s also been some great modern classics in recent years, including Frozen, Encanto, and Moana (all of which are streaming with a Disney+ subscription). The latter’s sequel just arrived in theaters, and while I enjoyed Moana 2, losing Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music really hurt the blockbuster.
Prior to its debut, information about Moana 2 was scarce, but now that it’s out, it’s predicted to earn a large sum during Thanksgiving weekend. I managed to catch an early showing of the film (check out TopMob’s Moana 2 review here), and overall, I enjoyed myself. Regrettably, the original music was one of the less impressive aspects in this animated sequel.
2018’s initial Moana film boasted songs penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda (known for his work on Encanto as well). Besides the anthem “How Far I’ll Go,” there were several catchy tunes in the score, such as “Where You Are” and Maui’s tune “You’re Welcome.” Regrettably, the music for the follow-up lacks the same strength.
In the new movie Moana 2, Auli’i Cravalho sings a new track titled “Beyond”, which is the standout song quality-wise. The songwriters for the film were concerned that Dwayne Johnson might not like his new song, and I find myself aligning with their worries. “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?” lacks the infectious melody of “You’re Welcome”. The latter song was a hit since the original Moana came out in 2018, so there was high anticipation for the sequel to meet those standards. However, in my view, it didn’t quite manage to achieve that level of success.
It’s clear that Lin-Manuel Miranda has a full plate, as Disney has kept him occupied by composing music for films like Moana, Encanto, and additional material for the live-action version of The Little Mermaid. Given his busy schedule, it’s understandable that he can’t be present everywhere simultaneously. However, his unique musical touch played a significant role in captivating audiences with the original Moana film. Regrettably, his commitment to writing music for the Mufasa prequel movie prevented him from rejoining the animated series.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed watching “Moana 2” and felt fortunate to catch it in theaters, as the underwater action scenes really shone there. However, some fans might be slightly let down when contrasting it with the first film due to a perceived deficiency in the soundtrack. To put it simply, after exiting the theater, I found myself humming tunes from the original movie, primarily because the sequel seemed to lack catchy, memorable songs.
