As a long-time enthusiast of the horror genre and a dedicated fan of the Alien franchise, I can confidently say that the latest addition to the series, Alien: Romulus, is not to be missed – especially on the big screen! Having attended numerous premieres over the years, I’ve grown accustomed to high-quality cinematic experiences. However, the sound design in Alien: Romulus truly surpassed my expectations.
The original “Alien” movie and its follow-up are often cited as exceptional in both science fiction and horror genres. The franchise has consistently been a staple in cinemas, with the recent addition “Alien: Romulus” doing well financially at the box office. After a number of hectic weekends, I managed to catch the new “Alien,” and there’s a significant factor that makes it worth visiting theaters rather than streaming it: the sound design.
Ever since the release of “Alien: Romulus” in cinemas, there’s been a lot of talk about its content, including the ranking of synthetics within the Alien franchise. I personally enjoyed the latest film, “Covenant”, which is available for streaming with a Hulu subscription. However, director Fede Álvarez really outdid himself on this new movie. The tension in the film was amplified significantly when I watched it in theaters, as the sound seemed to shake my seat – especially during tense moments.
Even though the shock moments in “Alien: Romulus” might remain impactful when viewed at home, it’s worth noting that most home sound systems can’t match the quality of a professional theater. Although I didn’t watch “Romulus” in 4DX, the movie’s immersiveness was still impressive due to the theater’s sound system. The tension built as my seat vibrated, and the Xenomorphs’ attacks on the characters became increasingly intense. Therefore, if you’re a horror enthusiast, I strongly suggest catching Álvarez’s terrifying film in a theater while it’s still playing there.
It’s clear that not everyone can catch every movie released in theaters, as many people prefer to stream them later or buy digital copies instead. With summer being particularly busy, it’s easy to understand why some may have missed out on “Alien: Romulus”, even if they’re die-hard horror fans. Although I considered waiting for a streaming release myself, I’m thrilled that I went to theaters to watch it and don’t want fellow genre or franchise enthusiasts to miss out on this experience.
Since Romulus has received widespread acclaim since its August debut, it will be quite challenging for the upcoming TV series Alien: Earth to measure up. It’ll certainly be intriguing to observe if a television program can recreate the same suspense and terror that the franchise is known for. Fortunately, the project is being directed by filmmaker Noah Hawley, and it has already been filmed and scheduled for release on Hulu via Fox in 2025.
Given the massive success of the movie “Alien: Romulus“, I can’t help but wonder if there will be a sequel directed by Fede Álvarez. The ending of “Romulus” certainly hinted at more storylines to unfold, so we’ll simply have to wait and see what the studio intends to do next.
