I Finally Watched 1923, And Realized I Love It So Much Because It Fixes One Of My Major Issues With Yellowstone

As a seasoned gamer of Western drama series, I find myself deeply immersed in the tales spun by the masterful storyteller, Taylor Sheridan. The latest addition to my viewing roster is none other than the prequel, 1923, and boy, have I fallen head over boots for Brandon Sklenar’s portrayal of Spencer Dutton!

The final episodes of Yellowstone’s fifth season are set to premiere on the 2024 TV schedule in November. So, I figured it was time for me to get caught up with the other shows from Taylor Sheridan about the Dutton family. Notably, this included a quick binge of 1923, and almost immediately I fell in love with Brandon Sklenar’s Spencer Dutton. I also realized while watching that I adore this prequel so much because it uses Spencer to fix one of the major issues I have with Yellowstone and Luke Grimes’ character Kayce.

Kayce And Spencer Serve Similar Purposes In Their Shows

To begin, it’s important to note that they share a commonality as youngest siblings: Spencer and Kayce. Additionally, they’ve experienced a shared loss, having older brothers who are no longer with them. This has resulted in an increased responsibility falling upon them within the Yellowstone ranch.

In Yellowstone, Kayce had to deal with the tragic loss of his older brother Lee. Upon returning to the ranch, he was received after being marked with the Y and essentially banished by his father. Prior to his return to the ranch, Kayce served in the military, an experience that undeniably left a lasting impact on him.

In Spencer’s situation, we encountered him in the year 1923 prior to his decision to rejoin his Montana family and his homestead. He had served during the war, evidently bearing the scars of that experience. Rather than returning home, he took up a life as an African hunter, where he crossed paths with his spouse Alex. The narrative unfolds as they journeyed back to the Duttons following news of John’s demise.

In both characters’ tales, they are faced with the idea that it’s their turn to go back home and manage the ranch. This concept makes for an engaging plotline. However, Kayce’s approach to this situation in Yellowstone has been less than perfect, whereas Spencer uses this pressure as a catalyst, propelling his journey forward.

However, Spencer’s Story Actually Capitalizes On His Past And Tension With The Ranch

In the cast of “Yellowstone,” Luke Grimes’ character Kayce plays a significant secondary role. On the other hand, in the series “1923,” Brandon Sklenar’s Spencer is a major player, sharing the spotlight with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Interestingly, both characters are potential contenders for running the ranch.

You can watch “Yellowstone” by subscribing to Peacock, and starting from November 10, new episodes will be airing on the Paramount Network.

Concerning the year 1923 and Taylor Sheridan’s other upcoming Yellowstone shows, you can access them all with a subscription to Paramount+.

In the TV series “Yellowstone,” it appeared from the start that Kayce was destined to assume leadership following Lee’s demise. Not only was his character embarking on a hero’s journey, but his troubled past piqued my interest in his personal development. However, over the course of five seasons, we haven’t been given any insight into his military days or the strained relationship with his father. Moreover, rather than taking charge at the ranch, he finds himself trapped in a frustrating loop, wrestling with the question of whether he wants Yellowstone or if he should consider leaving entirely.

Luke Grimes’ acting skills are truly remarkable, and the character Kayce seems to hold immense promise. Regrettably, it appears that the storyline for this character hasn’t advanced significantly.

Thankfully, the exact opposite thing happened with Spencer and 1923.

Throughout Season 1, there were numerous flashbacks to his war-time experiences, and Alex persistently drew out details about his past from him. Despite his efforts to keep it hidden, he has been more forthcoming than Kayce, providing us, the audience, with a deeper understanding of his character.

Furthermore, his heroic odyssey appears to be unfolding in this manner. Although he hasn’t returned to Monata as of now, fingers crossed for the upcoming Season 2 of 1923, he is diligently moving closer to it. He has a distinct aim and purpose, which fuels him and provides an engaging narrative that’s hard to resist.

Kayce might have encountered that situation on “Yellowstone,” and I’m hoping he does in the latter part of Season 5. Nevertheless, I’m incredibly grateful that “1923” rectified a significant problem I had with Taylor Sheridan’s primary series. Now, I can’t wait to delve deeper into Spencer’s narrative as he travels back to Montana to rescue his family’s ranch.
