As a cinephile who’s had the pleasure of witnessing some truly remarkable performances and directing feats throughout my years, I must say that Michael Keaton has left an indelible impression with his latest work, “Knox Goes Away“. This man is not just an actor anymore; he’s a storyteller, a filmmaker par excellence.
Lately, I’ve realized that my ultimate favorite actor has been Michael Keaton all along. But after finally managing to watch the movie “Knox Goes Away“, which can be found on Max subscription, I must admit that he’s also a strong contender for one of my favorite directors as well.
In the upcoming 2024 movie, titled “Knox Goes Away,” Academy Award nominee Michael Keaton not only takes on the lead role as a contract killer dealing with a life-altering diagnosis but also directs this film exceptionally well, in my view. This dual talent makes “Knox Goes Away” one of Michael Keaton’s most remarkable performances to date, and I’d like to delve further into why his directorial skills elevate this movie to greatness.
Micheal Keaton Proves Himself As A Natural Noir Filmmaker
Right from the start, especially during the sequence where John “Aristotle” Knox drives at night while Alex Haffes’ sax-heavy soundtrack plays, it was clear that I was about to watch a modern take on a film noir, aptly titled Knox Goes Away. This movie, in my opinion, stands out as one of the finest Neo-noir thrillers in recent years due to its ability to draw inspiration from the mood of classic crime dramas set in the ’40s or ’50s, yet never appearing outdated.
It seems that Keaton effectively captures this mood in his performance of Gregory Poirier’s script. He wisely steers clear of overly stylized elements, which might have been a trap for anyone attempting to pay homage to classic noir dramas. Instead, he adopts a subtle, understated style that harmonizes beautifully with the serious and earthy themes.
However, Michael Keaton’s Performance Could Have Been Better
Based on my declaration that Keaton is my favorite actor, you might think I concur with the positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes about his performance in “Knox Goes Away“. But to clarify, I must confess a preference for his directing abilities over his acting in this specific instance.
In the thriller genre, he’s not terrible, but his performance doesn’t stand out exceptionally. However, given that the character is supposed to be a ruthless, mentally deteriorating killer, it might be intentional. Still, I believe there was room for him to add more unique touches to the role – as he did with Batman – to amplify the film’s poignant ending and make it more emotionally resonant.
I Hope To See Michael Keaton Direct More Movies Soon
As a fan, I’ve got to say that Michael Keaton, whose real last name is Douglas, has undeniably shown his prowess in creating gripping crime dramas, particularly with the film “Knox Goes Away”. Notably, this isn’t his first foray into serious drama, as he previously played a hitman grappling with conscience in 2008’s “The Merry Gentleman”.
Consequently, it’s appealing to me to witness him explore new territories in his upcoming work, moving away from the camera. Maybe he could return to where it all started and produce a full-blown comedy. With his sharp sense of humor, I think he has the potential to create something truly exceptional in that genre.
Instead of revealing any plot twists from the movie “Knox Goes Away,” I intentionally kept spoilers at bay, hoping that this article might entice you to watch it if you haven’t yet seen one of Max’s top films. If you share my admiration for Michael Keaton as an actor, I firmly believe you should witness his directorial brilliance in this movie.
