I Finally Watched Saw…And Yeah I'm Never Watching Another Saw Movie But I Did Love This One Aspect

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a soft spot for intricate plots and thought-provoking puzzles, I was utterly captivated by the early 2000s horror masterpiece, Saw. Having grown up in the thrilling era of suspenseful cinema, I found myself drawn into the labyrinthine world of Jigsaw and his sinister games.

I enjoy watching some horror films that are highly regarded, both for their terror and comedy elements. I appreciate a good jump scare, but I draw the line at excessive gore and scenes involving harm to humans or animals. The Saw series, with its reputation for intense brutality, isn’t my cup of tea. I’ve only seen one film in this franchise, Spiral (the Chris Rock movie), which isn’t considered a standout by many fans. I have no experience with the original Saw films.

Although I had my doubts and have a preference for not watching franchise movies with numerous installments, I gave the Saw series a try. However, after viewing several entries, I can affirmatively state that this genre isn’t for me. The first Saw film is reportedly less gruesome than its successors, so I’m relieved I didn’t continue and potentially expose myself to more intense scenes. While others might enjoy the Saw films immensely, it doesn’t resonate with my taste in movies. Nevertheless, there was an intriguing aspect that I appreciated within this series.

Warning Saw movie spoilers are ahead. Proceed with caution.

The First Saw Movie Feels More Like A Mystery Thriller Than A Horror Movie

As a big fan of the genre, I found “Saw” to be both a horror movie and an intriguing mystery thriller. The gruesome nature of the body part amputations undeniably adds to the horror element. However, what really drew me in was the emphasis on solving the puzzle left by Jigsaw. I became engrossed in the film, not just as a spectator but as an active participant, trying to decipher his plans for Lawrence and Adam before they did. The mystery thriller aspect kept me guessing and fully invested throughout the movie.

I regretfully came to “Saw” late in the game, over two decades after its release. Consequently, I’d unintentionally encountered spoilers about the movie throughout the years through various sources. Still, knowing the major twist didn’t hinder my enjoyment. In fact, there were still so many aspects of the film that remained a mystery to me. For instance, I was completely unaware that Danny Glover and Michael Emerson were part of the cast. Despite the spoilers, “Saw” continued to surprise me with its intricate plot and well-hidden secrets.

It Invites The Audience To Play Along

In simpler terms, I believe “Saw” isn’t only meant for viewers who enjoy figuring out the mystery before the characters do. Instead, it’s designed to hook the audience right from the start and join us with Adam and Lawrence in their struggle against Jigsaw’s sinister plans. We’re all engaged in trying to understand what will happen next and if there’s any chance of escaping his traps.

As a passionate storytelling enthusiast, I truly appreciate this immersive style of narration. It draws me in and keeps me engaged, making film watching feel less like a passive experience. Instead, it becomes an exhilarating journey where I’m not just observing but actively participating and reacting to the unfolding tale. This kind of storytelling compels me to fully immerse myself in the narrative.

I Tried To Figure Out All The Roles Of The People In Jigsaw’s Game

The film “Saw” hints that Jigsaw is the primary antagonist and among the most terrifying modern horror movie villains from the early 2000s. However, it’s unclear if this crazed individual acts alone. At various instances, the story leads you to believe that Adam or Tapp (Danny Glover) might be collaborating with Jigsaw. Eventually, we discover that Jigsaw is compelling Zep (Michael Emerson) to join him in his heinous deeds.

The film raises suspicion against every character, leaving you guessing if the entire plot is merely a test for Lawrence. You’re also attempting to identify the mysterious figure behind Jigsaw. I fell for some false leads, or red herrings, only to realize they weren’t working with him. In this movie, Jigsaw operates alone.

The Saw Puzzles Intrigue Me

I felt the movie “Saw” could’ve benefited from additional intricate puzzles. With a mastermind antagonist like Jigsaw, I expected a greater number of challenging riddles and conundrums for both the characters and the audience. It seemed that some potential puzzles were set aside in favor of enhancing character development and maintaining a clear plotline. While I acknowledge the importance of character progression, I believe incorporating more intricately designed puzzles would have added to the overall appeal of the film.

After watching the films, I discovered that the Saw franchise encompasses video games as well. I’m thrilled by this news since I adore intricate puzzles and hope these games deliver that experience, fueling my enthusiasm for the Saw franchise.

The Setting Was Gross But Felt Like An Escape Room

The entire unsanitary room, including the unappealing bathroom, isn’t particularly charming. Yet, it wasn’t so repulsive that you couldn’t gaze at it for almost two hours. There was an intriguing feel to it, as if it could be used as a backdrop for a complex escape room scenario. Cleverly, someone transformed this concept into reality with a “Saw”-themed escape room, which can be found in Las Vegas.

With any luck, this open-concept setting for a potential escape room is full of promise. Its expansive, uncluttered design offers ample opportunities to conceal clues without making them too conspicuous. It’s as if the creators intuitively anticipated the need for an engaging escape room experience while designing it.

I Wanted To Know If Jigsaw Would Win In The End

It’s clear to me that there are around 4,000 films in the “Saw” series. Consequently, Jigsaw must have some level of success. However, I’m also aware that in some cases, the main antagonist meets their end in the initial installment. Subsequently, the subsequent films ignore this development. Additionally, I was privy to one spoiler: Lawrence makes appearances in various movies.

Despite being unsure if he made it through, I was left guessing as I saw the story unfold on screen. My knowledge of minor spoilers gave me an idea of what transpired but not the specifics, fueling my eagerness to discover the final outcome in “Saw”.

As a gamer, I personally don’t feel drawn to delve deeper into the intricacies of the Saw franchise or its backstory. However, I’m content with having watched the initial installment. It was engaging and thrilling, but it didn’t manage to capture my long-term interest.

Stream Saw on Max.
