'I Had One Shot': Brilliant Minds Star Reflects On Her Chemistry Read With Zachary Quinto And Joining NBC's New Medical Drama

As a longtime fan of medical dramas and a connoisseur of Zachary Quinto’s acting prowess, I eagerly anticipated the premiere of “Brilliant Minds.” The series’ unique focus on mental health and its stellar cast, led by none other than Quinto and Tamberla Perry, made it an instant must-watch.

Spoilers ahead for the series premiere of Brilliant Minds on NBC.

2024 sees the arrival of “Brilliant Minds,” a fresh medical drama on our TV screens, starring Zachary Quinto in his first major network role since 2015’s “The Slap” and “They Cloned Tyrone.” Tamberla Perry, also known from these series, is joining him. This innovative show concentrates on mental health instead of the more common medical themes found in dramas like “Chicago Med” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” and one of its stars has revealed that considerable effort was invested to ensure a harmonious pairing among the lead actors.

As Dr. Oliver Wolf, portrayed by Zachary Quinto, and Dr. Carol Pierce, played by Tamberla Perry, they are depicted as old friends and new work colleagues with a rich history. Initially, Wolf stated that she is the only person he genuinely likes, while Pierce consistently demonstrated trust in him, even when his methods were quite unusual. Remarkably, it appears that Wolf’s face blindness does not affect his feelings towards Pierce.

When I chatted with Perry on Zoom regarding the unique aspects of Brilliant Minds, I inquired whether she had auditioned for Quinto prior to being given the role. She revealed:

In March of 2023, about two years after the pandemic and just before our strike, I attended four auditions for this role through Zoom. My final audition was a chemistry test with him, marking our first encounter. Given the circumstances, in-person interactions were limited at that time. The experience wasn’t easy, but I knew I had only one chance to impress, and I managed to do so! [laughs] That’s why I’m here now.

As a devoted fan, I can confirm that from the get-go, “Brilliant Minds” made it clear that Wolf is gay, not as a setup for a romantic tension between Wolf and Pierce. Instead, Tamberla Perry had to create an authentic chemistry with Quinto – a feat she accomplished without ever meeting him in person or rehearsing together prior. She further explained:

It’s crucial to establish an instant connection with them. In just a short period, you need to demonstrate your ability to bring their words to life visually on the screen.

So far, only one episode has been released, but it’s clear that the show wouldn’t have taken off immediately if Wolf and Pierce didn’t seem naturally comfortable with each other. If Wolf was going to serve as his confidante, their friendship had to feel authentic, and it seems like the four auditions managed to create that believable dynamic!

After discussing her audition steps leading up to and including the scene reading with Zachary Quinto, Tamberla Perry further elaborated on what drew her towards the show “Brilliant Minds.” In simpler words, she expressed why she was captivated by the series.

In “Brilliant Minds,” we draw inspiration from the extraordinary life and accomplishments of Dr. Oliver Sacks, a renowned neurologist. Our narrative centers around Dr. Wolf, his team of interns, and myself, who serves as the head of psychiatry at Bronx General Hospital. Together, we delve into the last unexplored territory – the human mind – a subject that many shows shy away from. I find this focus on mental health and brain-related issues particularly compelling about our series, as it sets us apart from other medical dramas. This unique emphasis is one of the key factors that drew me to join the show.

The inaugural episode suggests that there’s much more narrative beyond Bronx General Hospital, as it appears Oliver Wolf has a complicated past, which could become even more tangled given he’ll be working with his mother. Details about Carol Pierce’s personal life are scarce at the moment, but Tamberla Perry explained what aspects of her character drew her to the role on Brilliant Minds.

The character Dr Carol Pierce, whom I affectionately refer to as ‘Dr Fierce’ Pierce, captivated me instantly. She embodies strength, excellence, and is a powerful Black woman on television – a rare sight that I don’t often come across. In the realm of Black psychiatrists on TV, she stands out, with perhaps only two or three others in her league. As the Head of Psychiatry at this hospital, Dr Pierce is one of the most renowned doctors in her field in New York City. Yet, instead of seeking greater opportunities elsewhere, she chooses to serve the Bronx General and give back to its community – a choice that makes her even more inspiring. Playing her character is exhilarating, and from the moment I read the script, I knew that this was my role, and I had to have it.

It’s likely that we’ll get to know more about Carol Pierce, both as a doctor and an individual, on the medical drama airing this fall on NBC, titled Brilliant Minds. The friendship between Tamberla Perry portraying Pierce and Zachary Quinto playing Wolf is expected to be a standout feature. Don’t forget to watch it every Monday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, right after The Voice. If you miss an episode, you can catch up with a Peacock subscription the following day.
