As a long-time fan who’s been through countless tag team battles, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the moment Private Party dethroned The Young Bucks was a game-changer. The sheer energy and emotion that Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen brought to the ring was electrifying, and their victory felt like a monumental achievement not just for them, but for AEW as a whole.
Following five years of pursuing the AEW World Tag Team Championship, Private Party ignited enthusiasm among wrestling fans when they overthrew The Young Bucks in a thrilling manner. As a devoted fan myself, Isiah Kennedy and Marq Quen’s victory against one of the world’s top teams was a truly impactful moment, and I couldn’t wait to discuss it with them.
Prior to Private Party’s inaugural title defense at Full Gear, a thrilling four-way battle that saw them best The Outrunners, The Acclaimed, and Kings of the Black Throne, I had the opportunity to chat with Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen about the dramatic closing moments of the match. In those final seconds, they executed the Gin and Juice (a breathtaking top rope Frankensteiner followed by a Cutter) on Nick Jackson, securing the victory. Their words during our conversation sent shivers down my spine: “We did it.
In the ring, when Quen shoved me and our faces were mere inches apart, it became tangible – this was truly about to unfold. It was as if I thought, “Wow, this is really happening now.” And then, after the count of three – 1, 2, 3 – it felt like we had achieved something significant. We had finally reached our goal.
Already having chills from hearing Kennedy talk about what I would imagine has been a highlight of his career, I asked Quen what that moment was like, and sure enough “emotion” reigned supreme.
Initially, I stepped into the ring, and when I suddenly shoved Zay at that moment, a wave of emotion overcame me. Consequently, my eyes began to well up. I was muttering, ‘Not now, not now,’ as I needed to move along the ropes. However, in my current state, I couldn’t make out the ropes clearly. I was operating on autopilot because it felt like the end was near. Finally, upon executing the hurricanrana, they set up for the cutter. To my surprise, there was no Matt [Jackson], and I just sat there, thinking ‘Yes, this is it.’
Despite yearning deeply to defeat The Young Bucks and break their long-standing reign, which had been established at the spectacular AEW Dynasty pay-per-view over six months ago, Private Party was willing to acknowledge and honor the influential duo weeks later, after they’d claimed their inaugural tag titles within the company.
Asking Kennedy about his experience defeating a team instrumental in launching AEW and revolutionizing global tag team wrestling over the last 15 years, he swiftly discussed the profound significance of it for him.
The duo known as The Young Bucks are undeniably impressive, coming in second only to the Hardy Boyz among my favorite tag teams. They were instrumental in introducing us to AEW and continue to inspire us. Defeating the wrestlers who have significantly shaped professional wrestling feels like a monumental achievement for us. I believe that it has elevated us from one point to another, and I am incredibly grateful to The Young Bucks for their contributions. I may not be able to repay them, but my gratitude towards them knows no bounds.
Although Quen shared his longtime friend and tag-team partner’s pride in defeating a team known for its impressive record, he did not concur with Kassidy’s remarks that it was impossible to repay Matt and Nick Jackson.
I concur with Zay’s points altogether, except for his belief that he cannot repay them. Instead, I believe we can return their favor by elevating these tag belts to a higher level.
Privately, the duo of Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen, known as Private Party, is poised to elevate their AEW World Tag Team Championship even further. Their recent victory over The Acclaimed in Full Gear’s opening four-way tag team match suggests a promising future for their title defense, potentially lasting for quite some time.
As some significant AEW shows are on the horizon, it’s likely that we’ll be hearing much more about Private Party, given their ongoing title defense and their role in re-energizing pro wrestling for fans over the coming weeks and months.
