I Just Learned A Hot Fact About Baywatch's On-Set Red Swimsuits That Seems Totally Wrong

As a 90’s kid who grew up with the iconic red swimsuits of Baywatch gracing my television screen every week, I must say that the revelation about the limited number of suits used in the early seasons is nothing short of mind-blowing!

Out of all the documentaries and BTS specials scheduled for 2024 TV, only one is centered around the once most-watched television series globally: Baywatch. On August 28, nearly three dozen cast and crew members from this beach-set drama reunited for After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, which can be streamed with a Hulu subscription. And it’s mind-blowing to learn an intriguing fact about the famous red swimsuits, shared by former star and producer Nicole Eggert.

Prior to the premiere of the docuseries, Nicole Eggert shared insights with media at the TCA press tour (as reported by Remind Magazine) regarding her post-Hollywood life and reasons for contributing to this retrospective. Additionally, she revealed an intriguing piece of information about the swimwear from ‘Baywatch’ that might not seem plausible at first glance. In her own words:

During my time on the show, there was only one suit available in various sizes. At that point, custom-tailoring hadn’t been introduced yet. … [Regarding her wardrobe], it consisted of merely two suit hangers – one for wearing and another for the dry one after returning. You would find just two hangers in your dressing room, with only two suits and a robe hanging there.

For the initial several seasons, and possibly beyond, it appears that each actress on Baywatch had just two types of swimsuits to wear during filming. Interestingly, only one of these suits was intended for water scenes, while the other was reserved for dry shots. This setup might have led to some awkward scenarios, contingent upon the sequence in which scenes were being shot.

It would be great if there were small dryers available on set for drying the wetsuits immediately. Wearing a damp one-piece isn’t my idea of fun, but I can’t imagine anything more unpleasant than the grating sound of wet skin rubbing against damp fabric.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that these suits were quite ordinary, mass-produced items, varying only in size from one to another. Modern adaptations like Baywatch would likely boast a diverse collection of swimsuits tailored specifically for each cast member to highlight their unique physiques optimally.

Initially, it’s clear that “Baywatch” wasn’t an instant global favorite, and probably the producers weren’t keen on spending too much of their budget on swimwear. However, had they known…

Fun fact with a twist: In his early days, Eggert graced the screen on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, a series known for its iconic red costume. Now, imagine if the stars of Baywatch were sporting Luigi-green swimsuits – quite an unusual sight, wouldn’t it?

On Wednesday, August 28th, “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun” will premiere on Hulu. So, make sure to set aside your most relaxed lifeguard chair and prepare for a thoughtful journey back to the shoreline – but remember, this is strictly a daytime excursion, as the spinoff of “Baywatch Nights” turned out to be quite different.
