I Just Realized One More Thing About The NCIS: Tony & Ziva Title That Really Doesn’t Make Sense

As a dedicated fan of the NCIS universe for years, I can’t help but feel a pang of excitement and confusion at the same time regarding the upcoming spinoff series, NCIS: Tony & Ziva. The prospect of Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo reprising their beloved characters is truly a dream come true. But, something about the title leaves me feeling uneasy.

As CBS prepares to debut the new “NCIS: Origins” series on TV in 2024, Paramount+ is set to introduce a fresh spin-off of “NCIS.” Previously announced, Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo will return to portray their beloved characters, Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David. In this installment, they’ll be on the run with their teenage daughter Tali after an attack at Tony’s security firm. I’m thrilled about this new project, but I can’t shake off some unease regarding its title.

In May, it came to light that the title of the series would be “NCIS: Tony and Ziva.” At first glance, this seems appropriate as the show centers around Tony and Ziva, long-standing characters in the “NCIS” world. However, there are a couple of issues with this title.

One possibility: Many fans, including myself, anticipated that the title would denote a specific location, as is common with most “NCIS” series, except for “Origins.” Given that “Origins” isn’t a location itself, it receives an exemption. A more fitting title might have been “NCIS: Europe,” considering how the show follows Tiva through various European countries.

Despite being a spin-off of NCIS, Tony & Ziva does not feature any NCIS agents or elements of the organization as of now. The couple and new cast members are no longer agents themselves, as indicated in the series announcement. Although there’s a chance that NCIS characters might appear, the title including NCIS may give a misleading impression, as it is not primarily focused on the NCIS organization.

Michael Weatherly, a former star of “Bull,” shares the same concerns as some fans regarding the show’s title. He believes that the title doesn’t accurately reflect the series’ focus on him, Ziva, and their daughter Tali. The possibility exists for a title change before the premiere, but it remains to be seen if any adjustments will be made.

Despite the uncertain title, I’m thrilled that a Tony and Ziva series is in development. For years, these characters have been beloved fan favorites on NCIS, and Chris O’Donnell (Tony) and Cote de Pablo (Ziva) have kept fans hopeful with hints of a possible reunion. With doubt about the title’s meaning, I was unsure if such a project would ever materialize. However, hearing about this spinoff has brought great excitement, despite my lingering concerns.

The spin-off series, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, can be accessed exclusively through Paramount+. This show is expected to explore a narrative distinct from the NCIS series, which is broadcasted on CBS. Thus, it’s intriguing to discover how this production varies from other franchise installments.

In summary, contrary to its name, “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” seems like a show that you wouldn’t want to skip.
