I Just Realized Superman Is The First Time As A Green Lantern Fan That I’ve Ever Been Happy With A Movie Adaptation

The long-awaited DC Universe (DCU) has officially arrived, spearheaded by co-CEO James Gunn and his initial series of projects, collectively named Gods and Monsters. Kicking off this expanding universe is the movie Superman, boasting a host of other superheroes such as Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, a rogue member of the Green Lantern Corps. As a fan, I must admit that this is the first live-action Green Lantern adaptation that truly satisfies me.

As a movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that “Superman” has been making waves at the box office, leaving fans like myself eager for more appearances from these iconic characters in forthcoming DC films and series. It’s no secret that Ryan Reynolds’ take on the Green Lantern in the past was less than stellar, with the character yet to star in a standalone movie since. However, Gunn’s latest production manages to breathe new life into Gardner’s character, despite his somewhat arrogant demeanor. The way his powers are showcased throughout the film is nothing short of impressive, making me believe that a compelling live-action Green Lantern isn’t just wishful thinking.

Guy Gardner Was The Perfect Green Lantern To Open The DCU

One reason I believe Green Lantern succeeded in Superman was due to the inclusion of Guy Gardner. Although he’s less well-known compared to other Lanterns such as Hal Jordan or John Stewart, his larger-than-life personality truly shone. Nathan Fillion found playing a jerkish superhero liberating, which infused both humor and tension into the movie’s 129-minute span.

In the upcoming “Lanterns” TV series, we’ll get acquainted with other Corps members, but Gardner’s character portrayal provided an immediate insight into his personality. Notably, his eccentric hairstyle (and the humorous comments surrounding it) significantly enriched the overall narrative of “Superman”.

The CGI Was Less Mind-Numbing Than In Ryan Reynolds’ Movie.

Speaking as a fan, I’ve noticed a lot of discussions about the visual effects in superhero films, and I have to say, I was quite impressed with Superman, despite some initial apprehension caused by David Corenswet’s flying scenes in the trailer. However, what truly won me over was the way Gardner’s energy construct was portrayed throughout James Gunn’s DC blockbuster. It was nothing short of spectacular!

In Ryan Reynolds’ movie, Green Lantern, there were more Lanterns and their constructs, but the action ended up feeling quite dull and repetitive. On the other hand, Gardner was among several heroes who utilized their powers during battles in Superman, which led to a wider range of action sequences. It remains to be seen how engaging the action will be when multiple Green Lantern Corps members are involved in future projects.

In a different take, we can say: The creations made by Green Lanterns might seem overly dramatic at times, but Superman’s abilities didn’t follow that trend. Interestingly, Gardner comically employs constructs resembling his middle finger to fend off villains, and even crafts a colossal bat during a battle against an extraterrestrial threat in the periphery of a scene. The somewhat animated nature of his powers enhanced the action and humor of the movie, further emphasizing why it remains the top live-action portrayal of the intergalactic peacekeeping group.
