I Knew Nobody Wants This’ Sommelier Joke Was Improvised, But The Editor Just Admitted One Of The Show’s Funniest Scenes Also Wasn’t In The Script

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of television and film, I can confidently say that Nobody Wants This is a refreshing addition to the romantic comedy genre. The show’s unique premise, combined with the chemistry between Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, makes for a compelling watch. However, it’s the improvised scenes like the basketball drinking montage that truly elevate the series.

Warning: Plot points for the series “Nobody Wants This” are scattered throughout this narrative. If you haven’t seen it yet, perhaps take a look at upcoming shows on the 2025 TV lineup instead.

Lately, Kristen Bell and Adam Brody have been causing a buzz following the release of their amusing romantic comedy series, “Nobody Wants This” on Netflix. The unique concept – a rabbi dating a sex podcaster – has grabbed fans’ attention, but it’s the cast’s chemistry and knack for improvisation that have made the show particularly endearing. Interestingly, we learned earlier that their initial meeting wasn’t scripted, and I was taken aback to discover another one of Season 1’s hilarious scenes wasn’t even written in the script.

An amusing subplot from Season 1 of “Nobody Wants This” involves Rabbi Noah participating in a recreational basketball league with his sons, but their skills on the court are less than impressive. Joanne (Bell) attends some of these games along with other wives as an attempt to fit in among them as the only non-Jewish woman, or shiksa. Unfortunately, this doesn’t go smoothly. However, things take a turn when her sister unexpectedly produces a stash of alcohol during one game, an event that wasn’t scripted for the series. According to editor Maura Corey, this is how the incident unfolded in the story.

In the basketball scene, there was a spontaneous addition – a drinking montage. During this montage, significant others of the players were seen taking shots whenever a player missed their shot. This wasn’t planned initially in the script. When I assembled everything, I found myself questioning, “Where’s the footage for the montage?” My assistant, Jen Rosenthal, replied, “There’s no montage.” To which I responded, “No, we’re definitely creating a montage.

It’s unclear how the partners of the players were expected to behave before the drinking montage was included, but this scene has become one of my favorite moments from the season. I’m thrilled that Corey revealed this detail to Indiewire. Instead of drinking when they score a basket, these guys amusingly (or perhaps not so tactfully) begin drinking and cheering whenever their men miss shots, resulting in excessive alcohol consumption. It’s quite humorous, and the entire sequence was skillfully edited together after all footage had been filmed.

Essentially, I assembled a video from leftover recordings and unutilized camera angles, then asked Jennifer, who fits the age group of the individuals in question, ‘What tune do you think would suit this?’ To which she responded, ‘Chumbawamba.’ It turned out quite amusingly.

Originally, showrunner Erin Foster disclosed that actor Adam Brody is actually clueless about opening a wine bottle in real life. In the scene where Noah interacts with Joanne at a party, it was planned for him to simply open a bottle of wine casually. However, he was incredibly terrible at it during filming, so they decided to go along with it and even had him make a joke about being a wine connoisseur.

When funny people get together, I expect that to come up with some funny one-liners, but it’s moments like these that really highlight why Nobody Wants This has been such a win for Netflix. It’s refreshing premise, it’s idea to put Bell and Brody together, and it’s otherwise very, very funny cast all make the rom-com sitcom a real win for the streaming service–and unlike many of Netflix’s other more sexually explicit romances, this one’s sex shop jokes are played for humor and not bedroom shenanigans, which means it’s (probably) OK to watch with your mom this holiday season. It’s no wonder Nobody Wants This has already been renewed for Season 2.
