As a film enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I must say that the anticipation for the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer‘ legacy sequel is as palpable as the fear one feels when they hear the ominous sound of a fisherman’s net. The recent set visit by none other than Sarah Michelle Gellar has certainly piqued our collective interest, but it’s the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James that truly sets our hearts racing.
1997’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar, saw a bit of behind-the-scenes mischief. During the filming of the anticipated sequel to the horror classic, Gellar, who portrayed Helen Shivers, found herself in a spot of bother after snapping a photo on set the day before Thanksgiving while dropping by her husband Freddie Prinze Jr.’s location. In a chat on “LIVE with Kelly and Mark”, Gellar confessed her mistake, stating:
In my role, you’d expect me to be well-versed in the definition of closed sets. However, here’s an unexpected story: During Thanksgiving, I accompanied my husband Freddie Prinze Jr. to Australia as he worked on a film set. While there, I sat on the set and thought, ‘What a fantastic photo!’ Only later did I learn that no pictures had been shared from the set yet, nor was it announced that they had started filming. Needless to say, my post turned out to be an unintentional spoiler!
The photo didn’t show any of the expected cast members for the follow-up, including Freddie Prinze Jr., which was surprising. However, Sarah Michelle Gellar is aware that she made an error and clarified that Helen won’t be resurrected in the sequel; her presence on set was for a different reason. Gellar further explained:
apologies once more for any confusion caused, but the photo was truly spectacular and filled with joy. You see, that’s the film Freddie and I became acquainted with, making the experience even more significant. As a result, it was incredibly exciting to share this special place with our children. To add to the magic, my best friend in California is the director and writer of this movie! It was an unforgettable time, but somehow, I found myself in a bit of difficulty.
One Crucial Star Still Needs to Be Cast in the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Legacy Sequel
Fans eagerly await news about whether Jennifer Love Hewitt will join the cast of the highly anticipated legacy sequel of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” as Sarah Michelle Gellar has already shared a first-look photo from the project, but no official word yet on Hewitt’s participation.
In the 1997 movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and its sequel from 1998, both James and Ray Bronson (Prince Jr.) managed to make it through. However, Hewitt has expressed that she doesn’t want a brief appearance if her Scream Queen character is ever revived in future installments. In an interview with Parade just before Thanksgiving, the actress discussed ongoing discussions regarding this topic. She stated:
“We’re almost there, but let me keep some details under wraps. It seems like the viewers are eagerly anticipating our return, and rightfully so! However, we’re juggling the demands of the 9-1-1 series and the movie production, which makes it a delicate situation. I want to make sure that if I reprise my role after 27 years, it will be substantial and meaningful, not just a brief appearance.
Like, I don’t want it to just be like that thing that’s like, ‘Oh, well, there’s the ghost of I Know What You Did past, here she is. So, I want to be able to carve out time to really be in it for people and to have it matter. So, we’re working on it. We’re so close. The announcement will be so exciting when it happens, for me as well, and I’m hoping it’s soon.”
On December 10th, Hewitt made an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show where she shared that she’s nearly ready to join the upcoming sequel. Unfortunately, this may not bode well for Sarah Michelle Gellar. If the original 1997 film had stayed true to author Lois Duncan’s young adult novel, her character Helen and love interest Barry (played by Ryan Phillippe) would both still be alive.
The movie titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is set to premiere on July 18, 2025. If Jennifer Love Hewitt reprises her role, it would be the first time we see her character, Julie James, and Ray Bronson (played by Prince Jr.) since they survived the events of “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” around three decades ago.
