As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of time travel narratives, I can confidently say that *Caddo Lake* is undoubtedly one of the most captivating and heartfelt additions to the genre I’ve encountered. The intricate plotlines and character arcs crafted by Logan George, Celine Held, and M. Night Shyamalan are nothing short of masterful.

If you’ve seen the film after reading the spoiler warning and are still here, let me tell you: I found Caddo Lake to be an exceptional time travel movie in quite some time. In my opinion, the writing and directing team of Logan George and Celine Held, with guidance from producer M. Night Shyamalan, have skillfully created a captivating sci-fi thriller that leaves viewers fulfilled on both logical and emotional levels.
As a gamer, I found the 2024 movie particularly captivating when Ellie, portrayed by Eliza Scalen from Old, uncovers the connection between her father’s (Dylan O’Brien, on a roll this year with his roles in 2024 and Saturday Night) and my 8-year-old step-sister Anna’s (Caroline Fink) mysterious disappearances. This revelation unfolds as the time displacement rift emerges when the lake’s water levels drop, adding an element of intrigue to the storyline. However, I can’t help but think that Caddo Lake would have been even more impactful if it included just a tiny bit more – perhaps a twist or two in the plot to keep us guessing until the very end.
I Wish Ellie Could Have Met Paris
In the heartwarming disclosure of Caddo Lake, it’s discovered that Anna, who unintentionally traveled to 1952 when she vanished, is the mother of Paris; furthermore, he is Ellie’s father. This moment stirred deep emotions as Anna had yearned for any bond with her father who disappeared before her birth. A way to further strengthen this connection could have been by depicting Ellie and Paris encountering each other at some juncture.
As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase it like this: Throughout my incredible journey across the time vortex, I’ve encountered Paris, who gets a chance to meet and rescue the woman he mourned deeply, though she was just a child at the time. Meanwhile, Ellie encounters her mother’s younger self in 2005, played by Diana Hopper (credited as Cee). Incredibly, she also meets her own young self during these temporal leaps. However, despite all these thrilling time hops, there was never an instance where she got to meet her father.
It’s plausible that it makes sense to keep Ellie and Paris’ stories distinct in the narrative, given their unique objectives. However, there exists a compelling scenario for Caddo Lake where both characters could reach the same conclusion without disrupting the carefully crafted timeline (which was crucial to maintain as per Held and George’s instructions to The Director). I believe this would not only be just for Ellie but also satisfying for the audience.
At Least Celeste And Daniel Got Some Closure
Even though Ellie had no encounter with Paris, it was heartening to witness Celeste (portrayed by Lauren Ambrose) experience some form of release towards the end when she found out, through her daughter’s investigations, that Paris never intended to abandon her. Additionally, she uncovered a surprising truth – the “other woman” she thought Paris had left her for was actually her own daughter from another time.
In 2022, Celeste manages to have one final visit to Paris with Paris, as he sneakily borrows her and Daniel’s (Eric Lange) vehicle from the hospital. Regrettably, this encounter wasn’t particularly pleasant, but it did provide Celeste a fleeting reunion with him. On the other hand, Ellie never had such an opportunity to see Paris again.
Additionally, Ellie’s insight into Anna’s future state provides Daniel with a comforting guarantee that his daughter is secure. Few parents of missing children ever receive the tranquility that this offers, making it one of the most heartwarming aspects of Caddo Lake.
Regarding the film “Caddo Lake,” although M. Night Shyamalan didn’t direct it, since he produced it, it could be considered one of his finest works so far. If we’re not considering direction, then it certainly stands as one of the best sci-fi movies this year and I hope it receives the recognition and appreciation that I believe it deserves.
