The following article contains spoilers up to Episode 4 of The Traitors Season 3.
In the third season of the American version of “The Traitors,” we’ve just completed episode four, and it’s safe to say that this may have been the most jaw-dropping episode so far. The peak moment was a heated confrontation at a roundtable, featuring Boston Rob and Bob The Drag Queen, filled with direct accusations of being traitors, not-so-subtle jabs about Zac Efron’s acting skills, and more. Regardless of how they felt about the results, viewers took to social media to express their thoughts on the event, and predictably, many discussions revolved around Boston Rob.
Putting it simply, the responses I saw could be categorized into two main groups. On one hand, there were countless admirers praising Boston Rob as a true reality TV icon and mastermind. They raved about how he managed to steer everyone towards voting out Bob The Drag Queen, who hadn’t been on most radars, showcasing his incredible strategic skills. They also appreciated him as an exceptional reality show competitor. Even some who aren’t regular Survivor viewers expressed their intent to revisit Boston Rob’s seasons of the show.
From another perspective, some fans discussed how Rob’s bold action, though impressive, was detrimental in the long run. If he had remained silent, either Ciara or Nikki would have been eliminated, and he could have strategically positioned Bob for future challenges. However, by eliminating his adversary, he also drew significant attention to himself early in the game, a concern that became more apparent in the post-roundtable discussions where Wes hinted to several people that he views Rob as a traitor due to his certainty during the roundtable.
Some supporters went even beyond the ordinary critique, suggesting that Rob intentionally lost or made a move knowing it would make for sensational TV, potentially damaging his long-term strategy. In their episode recap, renowned Survivor analysts The Survivor Specialists took this idea a step further by implying he may have deliberately eliminated fellow Survivor players Tony and Jeremy not for strategic reasons but to outlast them personally.
Having binge-watched every season of Survivor and Rob’s stints on The Amazing Race, I am well-versed in his gameplay strategies, and I have plenty of opinions about the current events on Season 3 of The Traitors. Firstly, Boston Rob is truly captivating on screen. This particular roundtable is set to be one of the most iconic in the show’s history, all thanks to Boston Rob. He possesses a remarkable talent to convince others to support his ideas swiftly, and he never gives up when pursuing a goal. Age may have caught up with him since we first met him on reality TV, but that spark is still very much present. His enduring appeal as a contestant across various games is not without reason; it’s the same charm that now has him hosting the Deal Or No Deal Island Aftershow every week. He was born for television.
Is it possible that he understood his actions were generating compelling television as he was performing them? Yes. It’s also plausible that he recognized an opportunity to create a memorable moment and perhaps boost his personal brand, potentially increasing his chances of being featured on various prime reality TV competition shows. Given his role as a contestant, it’s likely that such considerations influenced his actions to some extent.
Despite Boston Rob being a highly popular and engaging contestant throughout Survivor’s history, it can’t be denied that he may not hold the title of the best player in the show’s history. While he did secure one win and possibly should have won another, his premature eliminations in three other seasons are worth noting. More times than not, these departures were due to playing too aggressively from the start. This is simply his nature – he’s not someone who can quietly blend into the background or wait for bigger threats to be eliminated. His distinct personality and established reputation make it difficult for him to maintain a low profile. Consequently, when given the chance at the beginning of the show, other contestants were hesitant to include him in the game.
Boston Rob excels as a contestant on reality competition shows, skillfully manipulating his fellow competitors to vote in specific ways. This is part of his character, and it’s worthy of admiration among fans. Yet, it’s also true that he can overplay his hand at times, failing to consider the long-term repercussions of his bold strategies. Once again, this aspect of his gameplay is something that fans are justified in pointing out.
I’m not convinced he’s intentionally forfeiting “The Traitors” deliberately. In fact, he seems eager to claim the victory this season and boost his impressive career portfolio. However, there’s something in him that he can’t resist. When presented with an opportunity to eliminate a threat and produce a sensational reality TV moment, he often seizes it, even if he’s aware that such actions might harm him in the long run. That’s why he’s renowned as one of the greatest reality contestants, yet also a frequent loser.
