‘I Remember Specifically Being Really Snooty’: Back To The Future’s Lea Thompson Explains Why She Was Initially Cold Towards Michael J. Fox

As someone who grew up with the timeless trilogy of “Back to the Future,” I can vividly remember the thrill and excitement that Lea Thompson and Michael J. Fox brought to our screens. However, it’s fascinating to learn about their complex relationship behind the scenes.

It’s tough to imagine a point in history where Lea Thompson and Michael J. Fox weren’t friendly or close, given their extensive collaboration on the Back to the Future films and continued interactions since the trilogy ended. However, it’s essential to note that their friendship wasn’t always solid. Thompson confessed that when she first encountered Fox on the set of the initial Back to the Future movie, she acted snobbish towards him, although her behavior had some valid explanations at the time.

During an episode of the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast, Thompson, who portrayed Lorraine McFly in all three “Back to the Future” films and Maggie McFly in “Part III,” reminisced with host Steve Kmetko about her initial interactions with Fox not being smooth. This was partly because she was friends with Eric Stoltz, the original choice for Marty McFly, who was later dismissed when director Robert Zemeckis decided he wasn’t suited for the role. Additionally, Thompson admitted that she held Fox in less regard due to a personal reason.

In the past, I distinctly recall acting quite snobbish due to a significant divide between film actors and television stars at the time. I remember thinking, “He’s merely a TV actor, while I am a movie actor. I appeared in Jaws 3D.” It took some time for me to get past that, but he was so hilarious and enjoyable to work with.

Visiting the Back to the Future exhibit at Universal Orlando recently brought back memories of why traditional attractions continue to hold significance.

In the past, there was indeed a greater gap between movie and TV actors, but we should remember that “Family Ties” was among the top shows in the 80’s and is still regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms ever made. What’s amusing about Lea Thompson’s account is that Michael J. Fox was initially offered the role of Marty, not Eric Stoltz. However, things didn’t work out the first time because Fox was committed to “Family Ties.” Once production with Stoltz faltered six weeks into filming, Fox was re-approached, and they found a way to produce “Back to the Future” (one of the best sci-fi films) without interfering with the sitcom’s production schedule.

Although Lea Thompson initially seemed cold towards Michael J. Fox, she ultimately trusted that the recasting of Marty McFly would boost Back to the Future‘s likelihood of success. She thought that the filmmakers were likely making a wise decision since it was costly to switch actors so late in the creative process, suggesting they knew what they were doing. Lea Thompson also commented:

It’s common for people to say, “Wasn’t that enjoyable?” But the truth is, there was a lot of stress and it was quite intimidating, especially after Eric Stoltz was let go. It wasn’t just fun and games; it was a major undertaking and a significant responsibility.

34 years have passed since the science fiction series “Back to the Future” ended with the release of “Back to the Future Part III”. Despite this, Lea Thompson and Michael J. Fox continue to maintain a friendly relationship. In fact, Thompson mentioned that she meets Fox a few times a year at fan events. Alongside Thompson and Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Thomas F. Wilson were also part of the cast in all three “Back to the Future” films. However, Crispin Glover and Claudia Wells initially played George McFly and Jennifer Parker in the first movie, but Jeffrey Weissman and Elisabeth Shue took over these roles for the subsequent films.

At present, you can stream the “Back to the Future” films if you have a Star subscription, whether it’s a standalone plan or an add-on for services like Hulu. Meanwhile, Lea Thomson is currently featured in the TV series “The Chicken Sisters,” which is broadcast on Hallmark+.
