I Rewatched Severance Season 1, And I Have A New Theory About Mrs. Cobel's Obsession With Mark

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours poring over every minute detail of shows like Severance, I must admit that rewatching Season 1 has been an absolute treat. The intricacies and subtleties of the plot have only deepened with time, and Ms. Cobel’s storyline is no exception.

In a remarkably intricate manner, the show “Severance” is constructed such that virtually any scene could ignite countless discussions among viewers online, with even minor details often being scrutinized by those who enjoy speculating. As we eagerly await the arrival of Season 2 in 2025, which promises to fuel a wave of fresh predictions and revelations, I found myself viewing Season 1 with a more contemplative perspective. Some aspects of Mark’s storyline particularly resonated with me on this rewatch.

For those who haven’t seen Season 1, be cautious as the information below might contain spoilers. However, considering that most of you are likely past that point, let’s delve deeper into what I believe could be Cobel’s real intentions behind her relationship with Mark, growing under the guise of Mrs. Selvig. (Unfortunately, I couldn’t connect this to our goat-related queries and theories.)

I Think Harmony’s Mother Charlotte Was Severed, And Perhaps Died

Possible Clues

  • The Lumen breathing tube in Harmony’s shrine
  • Cobel calling her. mother “athiest,” while Selvig called her mother “Catholic”

One plausible hypothesis about Patricia Arquette’s character suggests that she was once separated, and that Mrs. Selvig might actually be the persona of her mother Charlotte. Harmony could then switch into this persona as her own “innie.” However, this theory doesn’t fully account for how information learned as Mrs. Selvig would benefit her if she couldn’t remember it, or how Mrs. Selvig is able to make connections in the Season 1 finale.

It appears to me that Charlotte, over the course of her life, deeply embraced the teachings of Kier Egan, a connection suggested by Harmony’s own dedication and the historical significance of her shrine room. However, for some reason or another, it seems she was separated from this lifestyle. Given her religious disposition, I doubt this separation was voluntary. Instead, it might be that Charlotte fell ill at some point and had a breathing tube inserted. The chip in her head could have been implanted with Lumen’s future plans for it in mind before she was put into an induced coma or perhaps cryogenically frozen.

As a movie critic, I found myself intrigued by the subtle hints in the series premiere suggesting that Charlotte’s personality might be more complex than initially perceived. A fascinating twist was introduced when Mrs. Cobel mentioned that Charlotte’s mother was an atheist, only for Mrs. Selvig to later tell Outie Mark that her mother was Catholic. If these statements are accurate, it seems that Charlotte’s ‘split’ occurred without any apparent health issues being the cause. However, it’s also plausible that Harmony might not have been so literal with her comments and instead intended to evoke the concept of duality – a fascinating exploration of one character’s inner conflict.

I Think Lumen’s Chip Technology Brought Gemma Out Of A Coma, Or Back From The Dead

Possible Clues

  • Ms. Casey not having an outie
  • Ms. Casey only being awakened for short intermittent periods
  • She’s the only one we know from the Testing Floor, implying her chip isn’t fully developed yet

In the series “Severance,” details concerning Gemma’s fatal accident remain vague, and there is scant information about Ms. Casey as well. It remains uncertain whether the accident truly occurred or not, despite Mark frequently visiting a particular location to pay his respects. Since we never witnessed the event itself, it remains unclear if Gemma’s body and face sustained any damage beyond what Mark could identify when he identified her.

Let’s speculate that Gemma met a tragic fate, either passing away or falling into a coma due to the crash. It seems plausible to me that Lumen utilized a distinct type of chip compared to those being implanted in citizens’ brains for memory suppression. This chip might be capable of more than just erasing memories; it could potentially even bring someone back from death. Given these extraordinary abilities, it makes sense why they require an entire floor dedicated to the research and development of such revolutionary technology.

Although the enhanced chip might not possess the ability to resurrect the deceased, it could potentially revive a patient who is comatose and bring them back to consciousness. This may be the reason why Miss Casey is only permitted limited time on the Severed Floor, with her supervision of Helly R. serving as a significant test. Additionally, this might explain why Miss Casey does not have any external “outie” to transform into.

I Think Harmony Is Personally Invested In Mark’s Project As A Way To Somehow Get Her Mother Back

As a cinephile, I’d rephrase that as follows: By merging these two theories, it seems clear that Miss Cobel has a personal stake in Mark’s team completing their project urgently. This is likely because the project’s outcome might be connected to whatever Miss Casey is dealing with, which could impact her own life or at least Charlotte’s.

At times, it appears as though Ms. Cobel is deliberately defying Lumen protocols, but given her character and dedication to Eagan, it seems unlikely that she’s entirely against Lumen. Instead, I believe her actions in secretly influencing Outie Mark’s life as Mrs. Selvig were driven by a personal desire to learn from his life with Gemma, which could potentially benefit her work with Mark S. and Ms. Casey. If her goal was simply to please her employers, she likely wouldn’t have gone to such great lengths.

Perhaps Lumen played a role in Charlotte’s demise, an explanation that might account for Harmony preserving Charlotte’s breathing tube as a keepsake rather than a more conventional memento like a photograph, and for her upholding her personal values above those of the company.

Regarding Harmony Cobel, I find myself entering Season 2 with a strong suspicion that she has hidden agendas for maintaining control over Team MDR, despite any disagreements about her methods at Lumen. I eagerly anticipate whether my theory will be confirmed or debunked as the season unfolds.

Severance Season 2 will be avaiable to stream with an Apple TV+ subscription on Friday, January 17.
