As a film enthusiast who has traversed the cinematic landscape for decades, I must say that the movies listed here have left an indelible mark on my heart and soul. Each one offers a unique perspective, a fresh take on life’s complexities, and a profound reminder of our shared humanity.
If you know me, then you know I love animated films.
2024 is jam-packed with an array of blockbuster films, from the record-breaking “Wicked” at the box office to the highly anticipated Marvel collaboration featuring Deadpool and Wolverine. While there were numerous spectacular live-action movies to choose from, my preference lies in animation. As a longtime enthusiast of this medium, I made sure to catch at least thirty animated films amidst the multitude of others that I watched in 2024.
Instead of discussing movies from this current year, let’s talk about the five 2024 animated films that left a profound impact on me and made me reflect on aspects of my life. Here they are:
Orion And The Dark Reminded Me To Face My Fears
As a gamer, I must confess that I wasn’t anticipating to be captivated by the Netflix exclusive “Orion and the Dark” as deeply as I was. For those who haven’t yet dived into this animated masterpiece, it revolves around a young boy named Orion, who grapples with intense anxiety and an extensive list of irrational fears, one of which is the darkness. It’s only natural that he’s afraid of the dark, right? But the film turns this common fear into an extraordinary journey.
However, Dark is in fact a sentient being, or rather a unique entity with a charming demeanor. His intention is to escort Orion on a journey, aiming to demonstrate that his apprehensions are impediments and that there’s no genuine reason for fear if one simply takes the initial step forward.
frankly, while the animation in this isn’t revolutionary, it doesn’t compare to other groundbreaking animated films such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (anticipating its upcoming sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse). Nevertheless, the movie Orion and the Dark effectively imparts significant lessons on overcoming one’s fears.
In my mid-twenties, there are numerous instances where I’m held back by fear from doing things that logically shouldn’t frighten me, but they do. Witnessing a child bravely confront his fears and navigate through the dark with imaginary superpowers sparked something within me. Subsequently, I became more willing to take risks when it came to my emotions. It’s an excellent family movie worth streaming.
Inside Out 2 Healed My Inner Child With Anxiety
It seems like just about everyone, including their moms, has caught a glimpse of “Inside Out 2”. This movie is clearly a follow-up to Pixar’s top-tier production, “Inside Out”, and continues the tale of Riley, now a teenager, grappling with fresh feelings as she navigates high school life and strives to be accepted – particularly by managing a new emotion called Anxiety.
Ah, yes, anxiety – that little bugger.
In a piece I penned, I shared my thoughts on a significant moment in the sequel of “Inside Out” that deeply touched me. Generally, I’m quite emotional and tend to cry at movies with ease. However, when a scene manages to make me reflect on my past experiences, acknowledge my errors, and leave me feeling moved – that’s when a film truly resonates with me and earns my admiration.
We may not receive any further installments of “Inside Out” anytime soon, given that the franchise has potential to continue, following Riley’s growth, and with its fresh addition of a new limited series on Disney+. However, the sequel was particularly touching.
That Christmas Showed Me The Beauty Of Community
This holiday season, if you haven’t yet caught myself immersed in “That Christmas” on Netflix, then you’re truly missing out! Revealed as part of the 2024 Netflix lineup, this heartwarming film unfolds the tale of the residents living in a quaint seaside town named Wellington-on-Sea. When an unexpected blizzard strikes and turns their lives topsy-turvy, they learn valuable lessons about friendship, love, and the true spirit of Christmas.
Not only can you enjoy Brian Cox as Santa in this film, but it offers much more than just a festive tale. The movie beautifully illustrates the importance of community, showing how even the most unlikely settings can foster joy, friendship, and contentment.
The film invites contemplation about those who may feel lonely during holidays and provides an opportunity for kindness and aid. One never truly knows another’s struggles, so consider taking action to improve the world around you. Among the numerous excellent Netflix holiday films, That Christmas particularly resonates with me as my favorite.
Flow Inspired Me To Find Similarities Amongst My Enemies
Flow is one of a kind.
This film showcases some incredibly stylish animation and narrates the tale of a small black cat whose home gets swept away by a flood. To stay alive, he hops aboard a vessel populated by various species of creatures. His mission is to figure out how to reconcile their differences so he can discover a new place to call home.
This movie is quite elusive. Originated from Latvia, it’s garnered attention for its exceptional animation, the absence of dialogue, and its thought-provoking mature content. You might wonder how a film about a cat befriending animals could tackle mature themes, but believe me, it does.
When I watched this movie in theaters, it significantly shifted my viewpoint on many things, particularly the way I perceive individuals who are dissimilar to me or those who have caused me harm in the past. Interestingly, Flow positions Cat in a unique predicament where he must rely on his natural adversaries, and gradually, he comes to recognize how much they resemble him.
Take note of the gentle nudge to discover shared experiences with those around us, even when it seems impossible – there’s always something in common. If you manage to catch this movie at your local cinema, don’t miss it!
The Wild Robot Changed My Perspective On Life
The Wild Robot is the type of movie you’ll only come across occasionally, and once seen, it might leave you in tears for hours. The main storyline revolves around a service robot that gets stranded on an island, learning to survive and form connections with the local wildlife.
To start, this movie simply takes my breath away. It’s an incredibly detailed, heart-wrenching animation that speaks volumes about the passion and dedication put into its creation. Yet, what truly captivates me is the narrative.
I don’t want to spoil this movie if you haven’t seen it. I really think it deserves to be viewed without any spoilers going in. But this movie changed how I felt about life – and when I mean life, just the Earth in general. It made me really pause and become one with nature, to sit outside and be thankful for what I have and the family that raised me – and it really made me want to call my mom and tell her how much I love her.
Gosh, I’m feeling quite emotional right now. But don’t let that stop you from watching “The Wild Robot”. It’s a fantastic movie, trust me. Just like TopMob’s Eric Eisenberg puts it, it’s breathtakingly beautiful, powerfully emotional, and has a dark sense of humor that will make you laugh.
2024 still has a few weeks remaining, and there are numerous other films yet to be watched. These last few flicks might just introduce a new favorite to you.
