As a big enthusiast of video games, I’ve managed to catch most of the top-tier video game films. Since I prefer watching movies from the comfort of my home, it was just a matter of time before I watched A Minecraft Movie.
To put it simply, my kids are deeply enamored with Minecraft, so there was no delay in our visit – we had to check it out immediately. Despite having a good understanding of the game from watching them play for hours on end, I personally don’t participate because I find it somewhat dull. To be perfectly honest, it bores me.
Even though I’m aware that the game known as Minecraft is incredibly popular, it wasn’t until I watched the latest movie that I truly grasped its immense popularity. Therefore, let me share with you my experience as someone unfamiliar with Minecraft, sitting among a sea of enthusiasts in a packed theater.
Oh, and minor spoilers up ahead.
Fans Were Getting A Bit Antsy In The “Ordinary World” Section Of The Movie
Currently, the people I was seated among were predominantly young children, around 9 or 10 years old. In essence, it seemed as though their parents had purchased the tickets for them and then left, making an expeditious exit.
Initially, I found myself seated among a group of 9 and 10-year-olds, along with some parents, and it was apparent that several children were growing restless at the start of the movie. This was likely due to the fact that although we were introduced to the Overworld and the Nether in the opening scenes, there was an unexpectedly lengthy delay before returning to these locations.
To put it simply, I took pleasure in the parts set in the “ordinary world,” as they featured characters that were quirky, reminiscent of Jared Hess, whom I’m quite fond of, particularly his work in “Nacho Libre.” In fact, there was a scene involving a storage unit that had me laughing alone, which, on some level, was rather awkward.
It was clear that many children seemed uninterested, as the one behind me persistently nudged my chair, and another child close by murmured, “This is moving too slowly.
Initially, there was much noise and a general feeling of tedium. However, as the genuine Minecraft activities commenced, everything transformed.

The Crowd Erupted When Jack Black Appeared And Said His Name Was Steve
Initially, I must admit that I’m a fan of Jack Black, and his eccentric acting was perfectly fitting for A Minecraft Movie. However, I wasn’t certain that fans would appreciate his high-energy portrayal, given that Steve in the game is more subdued. In fact, one might even say Steve is quite ordinary.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it’s common to find players customizing Steve’s character with Enderman or Alex costumes. However, it seems that Steve lacks a distinct personality within the game compared to Black, who really shines with his charisma.
But, let me tell you. When Black first appeared in the movie, the audience went BALLISTIC.
There was a strong sense of shared excitement among everyone. It wasn’t mere chaos; it was genuine enthusiasm building up as the crowd eagerly awaited his arrival. When he took that dramatic pause before revealing his name, the anticipation in the air was noticeable. The children were on tenterhooks, hanging onto every second, eager to hear him say, “I am Steve.
Indeed, and what a stir it caused! As soon as he spoke his name, the crowd’s volume skyrocketed. It was both adorable and chaotic, truly remarkable for just a simple introduction. Yet, it wasn’t solely that moment that set them ablaze; there were other instances that took their fervor to unprecedented levels, far beyond comparison.

In Fact, The Crowd Cheered A LOT
To be honest, Minecraft still doesn’t resonate with me entirely. My child can go on and on about it, and as a caring father, I give him my attention. Eventually, after he’s talked my ear off for quite some time, I gently interrupt by saying something like, “Alright, let’s switch topics now.
As a cinephile, I must confess that many of the movie’s nuances completely eluded me. However, whenever something significant unfolded on screen, the collective response from the audience – children whistling, bouncing up and down, and howling – was my signal to nudge my son and inquire, “What’s going on here?” To which he would promptly enlighten me.
In simpler terms, when Steve enters a village and mentions, “Villagers seem to adore bread,” the crowd erupted in applause. It appears that villagers enjoy bread, you could say. In another situation, a pig wearing a crown walks in, causing some people to exclaim, “Wow!” When I questioned my son about the meaning behind a crowned pig, he explained, but I’ve since forgotten the details.
Indeed, the entire film played out this way: Unexpected events would unfold, causing quite a stir among the audience. The most electrifying moment took place with a tiny zombie on a chicken, an occurrence that garnered such deafening cheers, it felt like I was at a live sports game. My son mentioned that “the chicken jockey” is a rarity in Minecraft, so I’ll have to trust his knowledge on the matter.
At last, it felt more like a surreal dream than reality. I thoroughly enjoyed watching “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, and there were numerous easter eggs hidden within it, yet the audience remained surprisingly quiet when something recognizable appeared on screen. Let me tell you this, Minecraft enthusiasts, you are a unique group, and I find that intriguing!

My Son, A Devoted Minecraft Player, Was A Bit Miffed At Times, Though
Initially, it was my daughter who discovered Minecraft, but it’s my son who developed an intense fondness for this game. He doesn’t merely play it; he immerses himself in it. Intriguingly, even my father printed a quiz with 50 Minecraft trivia questions, and guess what? My son answered them all correctly!
Often, my boy seems to be in pain and shouts loudly, causing me to rush into the room. But upon arrival, I usually discover him engrossed in a game of Minecraft on his Nintendo Switch.
It seems likely that any criticism of the movie would come from him, but overall, he found the film quite appealing. He specifically noted that Black executed “the water bucket grab” effectively, and he was also struck by the film’s careful attention to detail.
To clarify, on several occasions, my son took on the role of a spectator offering criticism – or armchair quarterbacking. For example, he supported the use of the water bucket grab during a particular scene, but also suggested that at one point, Jason Momoa might have benefited from using the “ladder clutch” instead…apparently this is another type of grip or hold.
As a movie enthusiast, let me express my displeasure with a particular scene in the film: where they haphazardly tossed a gooey substance onto a bridge and then recklessly jumped on it. I firmly believe there was a more sensible alternative, and I couldn’t help but feel that this part of the movie missed the mark significantly. Frankly, my Minecraft-savvy son would have undoubtedly offered some constructive feedback to the screenwriters if given the chance.

All The Same, My Kids Gave It Five Stars, And The Audience Gave It A Standing Ovation
Despite Jason Momoa’s character not holding onto the ladder in the movie, my kids thoroughly enjoyed it and gave it a top rating of five stars – quite unlike the critics who hold a starkly contrasting view on the film. In fact, my daughter declared it as her new favorite movie, dethroning Trolls Band Together, which was previously her most cherished film.
Even though my son occasionally expressed some reservations, he ultimately agreed. Admittedly, it was a bit disheartening to discover that he enjoyed it more than Godzilla Minus One, but then again, I am a fan of Godzilla, while he is fond of Minecraft. Given his preference for Minecraft, it’s not surprising that he greatly preferred this instead.
Despite being just one person, there were others who joined in the applause too. The children from my theater group clapped at the end, many of them even standing up to show their appreciation. However, when a scene came where some kids exclaimed “Can he talk?!”, they all sat back down again (I won’t spoil it for you who “he” is).
Regarding my opinion on the movie, it was just alright. Personally, I found the scenes leading up to their arrival at the Overworld to be the most engaging, although it appeared that I was the only one who felt this way, as no one else seemed to find those parts amusing.
Indeed, it brings me joy to see that the children enjoyed themselves, and the crowd had a fantastic time too. It truly warms my heart to know this.
What do you think? Did you see A Minecraft Movie with fans? I’d love to hear about your experience.
