Towards the close of 2021, Willem Dafoe once more took up the character of Norman Osborn, also known as The Green Goblin, in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the 27th Marvel film. Despite our joy at his return from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man series, and anticipation for Colman Domingo’s portrayal of the character in the Disney+ animated show “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” it remains uncertain whether we’ll ever encounter a Norman Osborn who fits within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe narrative. However, I find myself intrigued by another actor’s suggestion for playing the role within the franchise.
Actor Chris Diamantopoulos, known for his work in superhero media, such as voicing characters like Green Arrow, Steve Trevor, and Aquaman, and appearing in “Invincible,” which is available with a Prime Video subscription, has expressed interest in playing Norman Osborn within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite not having appeared in any Marvel projects thus far, Diamantopoulos has shared his desire to take on this role.
I believe we could create a show titled ‘Goblin’ that focuses on Norman Osborn’s journey leading up to his transformation into the Green Goblin. Ideally, I would love to play the role of Norman Osborn in this series.
It’s quite intriguing! Since Venom, Morbius, and Kraven have their own movies in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, it seems fitting that Norman Osborn, Peter Parker’s primary adversary, should also have his own project to shine. Unlike those films, the series Diamantopoulos is proposing could take place in the same universe as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. While 2002’s Spider-Man depicted Willem Dafoe’s Norman transforming into the Green Goblin, I find the concept of a Disney+ series focusing on six to eight episodes delving into his downfall particularly appealing.
Considering the success of recent Spider-Man spinoffs, Agatha Harkness’ potential solo series after WandaVision, and DC’s focus on villains like Joker and Penguin, a Green Goblin series might not just be wishful thinking but a realistic possibility. Whether it eventually becomes part of the Marvel TV shows lineup is yet to be determined, but actor Chris Diamantopoulos has expressed interest in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some capacity. As he stated:
It’s clear I’d fit right in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, given my lifelong passion for Marvel comics. As a kid, one of my first stops was always the Silver Snail comic shop. From then on, I’ve been an avid fan, and even passed this love down to my son who’s quite the collector, especially of 80s and 90s issues.
Regarding future Spider-Man productions, beyond the announced “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, only one more has been scheduled thus far: Tom Holland’s “Spider-Man 4” set to release on July 24, 2026. The animated movie “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” is still in production, aiming to conclude the trilogy. Additionally, there are hints that Miles Morales might star in his own live-action film. Lastly, the Nicholas Cage-led “Spider-Noir” series is currently being filmed and will eventually air on MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video, with a release date yet to be announced.
At the moment, make your way to Disney+ to catch Willem Dafoe’s past Green Goblin roles, and keep in mind that “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is set to debut on January 29. The new TV series of Chris Diamantopoulos, titled “The Sticky“, can be found streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
