I Thought ABC Had Spoiled Will Trent’s Big Twist For Angie, But I’m So Glad To Be Wrong After Erika Christensen’s Latest Performance

In the 2025 TV lineup, it seemed like a whole new series with Will Trent, as he didn’t don his customary suits and Angie was stuck in an uninteresting job post-APD dismissal. However, the recent episode titled “Find a New Pond” is bringing the show closer to its original state, as Angie regains her position at the police force and reunites with Ormewood. This unexpected turn of events was quite predictable, yet it still offered some delightful twists that caught me off guard, even after I’d assumed ABC had revealed Erika Christensen’s character’s future in the previous week’s promo.

In the third episode of Season 3, Angie began where she left off after delivering a heartfelt speech to the APD panel about reclaiming her previous position. However, she hadn’t received a response by the time the story resumed in “Find a New Pond”. Coincidentally, a case came her way when a swan was found dead at a country club community with a severed finger in its beak. (You can watch it now if you have a Hulu subscription.)

At APD, Ormewood and Co. were hesitant to assist her due to concerns it might affect her chances of reinstatement. However, when evidence suggested the crime was linked to seemingly innocent handyman John, whom Angie had encountered in the last episode, they found themselves with no other option. It turned out that John, despite his harmless appearance, wasn’t as innocent as he seemed. Ormewood later discovered that John had previously been convicted for the rape and murder of a teenage girl.

Almost all of this scenario seemed hinted at in the promotional video that was broadcasted a week ago. So, I expected Angie’s major confrontation in the episode would occur after she was confined to a room with John. It seems logical that this would connect to the GBI case of the week, serving as her opportunity to demonstrate her skills as a police officer and reclaim her position at APD, doesn’t it? Here’s a link to last week’s episode if you missed it: [Episode Link]

Turns out I was fooled! Angie’s plotline mainly diverged from Will’s since he got back to working with Faith, while John, the potentially deadly handyman, turned out to be a false lead whose importance decreased long before the episode ended. Instead, it was Angie who pieced together the puzzle to uncover the true culprit – someone who had been using hidden immigration papers to keep workers trapped on a poultry farm owned by his family. Things got pretty rough in the ensuing struggle, but Angie emerged victorious and was warmly received back at the APD as the credits began rolling.

I rarely find joy in admitting mistakes, but I’m delighted now to discover that ABC managed to keep secret one of Season 3’s major twists, not just concealing it before airing, but also saving some of Erika Christensen’s most powerful scenes for the actual episode. The hour was thrilling television, even though the previews did reveal that Will would abandon any plans to rekindle his relationship with his long-term love. Bravo to the network for maintaining a high level of secrecy over the key aspects of the case that led Angie back to her beloved job!

To find out more about how she and Ormewood collaborate following their split, don’t forget to catch ABC every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET for the third season of Will Trent, preceding High Potential at 9 p.m. ET and The Rookie at 10 p.m. ET. Notably, Kaitlin Olson’s High Potential is the only one among these Tuesday shows that has been renewed for the 2025-2026 TV schedule thus far. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the future of Will Trent and/or The Rookie is uncertain. While High Potential has been airing since last fall, Will Trent and The Rookie are still relatively new this season.
