I Told Will Ospreay He Has 42 Five-Star Matches, And The AEW Star Had The Best Response

As a die-hard wrestling enthusiast with years of ring-side experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that Will Ospreay is one of the greatest talents to ever step into the squared circle. With his record-breaking 42 five-star matches, he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with legends like Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega.

If you’ve caught any of Will Ospreay’s performances throughout his career, it’s clear that this AEW International Champion is among the world’s top wrestlers. In the upcoming three-way match where he’ll defend his title against Konosuke Takeshita and Ricochet at WrestleDream, the British high-flyer boasts an impressive record, with more critically acclaimed matches than any other competitor in history. Furthermore, his tally of five-star matches surpasses the total that WWE has garnered over a span of more than four decades.

Prior to the upcoming AEW pay-per-view, where AEW World Champion Bryan Danielson will defend his title against Jon Moxley, who is set to face Ospreay’s Dynasty rival in the main event, I shared with the globetrotting wrestler an interesting fact: Dave Meltzer from The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has given him 42 five-star (or higher) matches across his 12-year career. This information came as a surprise to him.

It took me by surprise to realize I had a rating of 42. That’s quite amusing! … To be honest, I can’t recall the exact moment I learned about the Five-Star Meltzer system, as it seemed familiar yet puzzling. It wasn’t until Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada earned their epic six-star match at WrestleKingdom that everyone went crazy about it. And I thought, what on earth is this? But, no, it didn’t keep me awake or cause any distress. With a 5-year-old to look after, I have more pressing matters to attend to, like figuring out these dinosaurs!

In a more serious note, Ospreay, who’s beloved for his wrestling skills and openness about mental health issues, is careful not to disregard the high ratings he receives, as he values every segment of the wrestling audience and doesn’t want to overlook any fanbase.

We should cater to everybody. And clearly, I cater to that audience and I’m trying my best to cater to a TV audience and I’m trying to cater to an internet audience because I feel like wrestling is generally for everybody. So why should we ignore any type of fanbase if someone’s actually saying something positive about wrestling? Like, fuck me, but my God, someone’s talking like giving compliments about wrestling Jesus Christ. Unheard of these days.

In the world of wrestling, Will Ospreay’s 42 matches rated five-stars or higher place him among notable contemporaries such as Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega. However, his accomplishments also echo those of legendary wrestlers like Mitsuharu Misawa, Kenta Kobashi, and Toshaki Kawada. It’s important to remember that wrestling is a highly subjective art form, where opinions can vary greatly. But Ospreay’s performances in prominent promotions such as NJPW, AEW, RevPro, and PWG have left an indelible mark on the history of wrestling.

If Ospreay ever reaches the 50-mark, it’s likely that Dave Meltzer might prepare a celebratory cake or stack of pancakes for him.

Ah, Dave’s gotta pay for my pancake orders from now on if I get 50 five-star matches.

In his approaching bout with Konosuke Takeshita and Ricochet, who he shares a rich past with, Ospreay might move a significant step towards his grand accomplishment in the near future.

To catch live performances of Will Ospreay, Chris Jericho, the Young Bucks, “Hangman” Adam Page, and Katsuyori Shibata in action, don’t forget to tune in to WrestleDream this Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on TrillerTV, YouTube, or your regular cable and satellite providers.
