As a film buff with an undying love for theme parks, I’ve longed to immerse myself in the vibrant atmosphere of Universal Orlando‘s Mardi Gras celebration. Unfortunately, my last visit coincided with pandemic restrictions, which stripped the event of many of its enticing features. This translated into missing out on the grand parade and the enchanting concerts that usually accompany this festive occasion.
A significant aspect of Mardi Gras involves the numerous concerts that are held. Notably, renowned artists perform every Saturday night during the festivities, and these performances are included in the park admission fee, meaning there’s no additional cost. Regrettably, I had scheduled myself to be at the show featuring the pioneer of autotune, T-Pain, on the previous Friday evening. However, I must admit that I underestimated just how wild this concert was going to be.
A Universal Madi Gras Concert Crowd Is Impressive, Even or A Theme Park
Upon reaching Universal Studios Florida, I had planned to catch the Mardi Gras parade first, followed by the evening concert. The parade was set for 7:30 PM, with the concert kicking off roughly an hour afterwards.
It hadn’t crossed my mind that there could be an issue, given my frequent transitions through theme park crowds during Disneyland’s fireworks and Fantasmic shows. I assumed there would be ample opportunity to catch both events, didn’t I?
Instead of saying “Not so much,” you could phrase it more casually like this: “It wasn’t too bad.”
“I had an excellent vantage point to watch the Mardi Gras parade right at the start of its route, which also happens to be the end because the parade follows a loop. After the parade ended, I made my way towards the concert location, but upon arrival, I discovered that the performance area was packed and there was a huge crowd overflowing, taking up any available space nearby as people tried to get as close as possible to see anything and just be near enough to hear.”
“I had a fantastic position for watching the Mardi Gras parade at the start of its route, which also happens to be the end since it’s on a loop. When the parade finished, I moved towards the concert area, only to find that it was jam-packed with people trying to get as close as possible to see and hear whatever they could.
Throughout my lifetime, I’ve frequently visited amusement parks, both for leisure and professionally. Over the years, I’ve found myself in quite extraordinary gatherings. On numerous occasions, I’ve waited in lines on opening days for exciting new rides. I’ve witnessed spectacular firework displays, yet never experienced a crowd as immense as this one.
The multitude poured into other parts of the park, with queues stretching out for the Mardi Gras food stalls and alcohol vendors, a sight longer than I’ve ever encountered in Universal Studios Florida.
You’ll Need To Commit To Attend A Universal Orlando Concert
If you’ve ever attended a regular-ticketed music event, then you’re aware of the unique experiences they offer. To secure a prime spot, it’s crucial to arrive as soon as possible. Since Universal Studios Florida opens approximately 12 hours prior to the concert, early birds certainly have the opportunity to beat the crowd. I can’t confirm if anyone was there that early, but many seemed to spend their entire day waiting for the concert to begin.
It’s my hope that most of the individuals who spent their whole day seated are local residents benefiting from Universal Orlando Annual Passes. I find it hard to fathom spending hours of your theme park experience saving a spot for a concert when there’s an entire theme park full of attractions and experiences waiting to be explored.
It’s likely that while not all artists may be considered as selling out the concert venue, this year’s lineup, such as Joe Jonas among others, is undoubtedly popular enough to more than fill the space.
Perhaps, had I been a big fan of T-Pain, I might have endured the crowd. However, I managed to leave the park, quite a challenge given the throng, and returned to my hotel instead. Honestly, The Strong Water Tavern is more in line with my preferences.
