I Typically Don't Like MCU Cameos, But Deadpool And Wolverine's Insane Head Count Really Worked. Here's Why

As a long-time Marvel fanatic and avid Deadpool enthusiast, I must say that the cameos in “Deadpool & Wolverine” were nothing short of delightful surprises. Coming from someone who’s been through the rollercoaster ride of cameo appearances throughout various superhero films, these felt refreshingly different.

In the 2024 movie lineup, the film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine was unveiled to massive acclaim. This blockbuster sensation not only ruled the box office but also earned critical praise, with audiences worldwide reacting enthusiastically to unexpected cameos that made appearances on screen, causing gasps of surprise and cheers.

Clearly, I was among those who appreciated it. To be honest, I wasn’t aware of every cameo – I did know some of the Deadpool and Wolverine appearances beforehand, but for many others, I found myself laughing and genuinely enjoying them. In truth, the abundance of these surprising appearances in this film seemed to work quite well.

Many Of The Cameos Made Sense To The Story

I don’t find cameos very appealing because they typically hold minimal significance for the storyline. The only exceptions are when Stan Lee appears in Marvel movies, and that’s understandable given his pivotal role as one of Marvel’s key creators.

I don’t really enjoy many cameos from the MCU or cameos in general. They often serve as a momentary distraction, making viewers exclaim “Wow! I recognize that face! They’re amusing!” But shortly after, we quickly forget about them while waiting for the story to progress further.

I typically prefer intense films or top-notch horror movies since unexpected appearances (cameos) rarely occur. Yet, I was genuinely captivated by the cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine, as they seamlessly fit into the plotline.

Often, cameos are carelessly added to films without much consideration for the plot, but in the case of Deadpool & Wolverine, each appearance was exceptionally well-executed. From Hunter B-15, who made an appearance towards the end, to Jon Favreau’s portrayal of Happy Hogan instead of the usual Samuel L. Jackson cameo, every character seemed to have a purpose, a role, and a place within the narrative, even if their screen time was limited. It’s this thoughtful integration that I found particularly impressive.

I Hadn’t Expected Much From Elektra, Laura Or Blade, But They Surprised Me

From the moment I learned that Jennifer Garner would reprise her role as Elektra, I found myself reminiscing about my past encounter with her portrayal in 2003’s “Daredevil” and its spinoff. Intrigued by her character, I was eager to discover how the filmmakers would utilize her cameo and just how deeply she would be woven into the storyline of this new movie.

What surprised me was not finding her paired up with X-23 (Logan’s counterpart), Blade, and Gambit, portrayed by Channing Tatum – a role he didn’t get to play during the Fox era. As I sat in that theater, I watched these characters stride in, embodying the ultimate coolness, and yes, they truly lived up to the hype!

Initially, I was extremely anxious… almost unbearably so, fearing that they would only appear for a single scene and then vanish forever from my viewing experience. However, luckily for me, the brief appearances these actors made transformed into substantial roles. They weren’t merely there to spark memories of Wesley Snipes as Blade. Instead, we witnessed this character fight off countless villains, and I couldn’t help but be thoroughly engrossed in it.

As someone who has spent years poring over art and appreciating its hidden depths, I can confidently say that discovering obscure cameos like this one is truly a delight. The way they are skillfully woven into a larger work, often unnoticed by the untrained eye, is what makes them so intriguing. And let me tell you, even though it took me a moment to recognize Channing Tatum in this piece, I was thrilled when I finally figured it out with a quick Google search. It’s experiences like these that remind me of the endless possibilities and joy that art can bring into our lives.

Even The Sheer Amount Of Deadpool Variants Didn’t Shock Me As Much As Normal

One memorable instance in the story of Deadpool and Wolverine occurs when they engage in a frenzied battle against numerous versions of Deadpool, summoned from the Void by Cassandra. Notably, this confrontation features several familiar faces making appearances.

In this production, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynold’s wife in real life, lends her voice to Lady Deadpool, while Nathan Fillion voices Headpool. Moreover, Matthew McConaughey is the voice behind Cowboypool. Interestingly, even Reynolds’ children contribute by voicing Babypool and Kidpool, with limited lines spoken by most characters.

As a devoted fan, I can assure you, there was no sense of being pushed or manipulated. Every element seemed perfectly placed and essential, not a single unnecessary detail. It wasn’t like they suddenly unveiled their true identities with a grand reveal, more like we recognized them by the sound of their voices alone. If it wasn’t obvious to you initially, you would discover who they were in the credits.

I really enjoy subtle cameos, the ones you might not catch at first glance but appreciate their significance later on in the plot. I’d welcome seeing more of these types.

I Even Liked The Inclusion Of Chris Evans As Human Torch – Even If I Miss Him As Cap

I could chat endlessly about my affection for Chris Evans as Captain America in the MCU, and how his absence is deeply felt. Yet, I enthusiastically support Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Sam Wilson as the next Captain America. I’m truly excited for the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World.”

Additionally, I had a hunch he would arrive, yet it wasn’t until Evans appeared, somewhat leaner than his Captain America days, that I truly felt convinced. At first glance, I anticipated him to grab a shield, but upon hearing “Flame on!” as the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four movies, I nearly shouted aloud. Indeed, it was none other than Evan who portrayed The Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine!

Notice, that performance was quite impactful. It didn’t just surprise us by going against our assumptions, but it played a crucial role in certain parts of the plot. He wasn’t simply a fleeting presence; he lingered and provided some uproariously funny moments. To top it off, his extensive use of profanity in the Deadpool & Wolverine post-credit scene had me rolling with laughter.

The Cameos, While Plentiful, Didn’t Just Feel Shoved In The Film For Giggles

It seems my intention is to express that although the cameos were numerous in this movie, they weren’t as problematic as I anticipated. Generally, I approach Marvel Cinematic Universe films with a degree of wariness due to uncertainty about what to expect and the possibility of unexpected cameos. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this instance.

Gosh, it was quite delightful when Henry Cavill unexpectedly appeared as a Wolverine variant, isn’t it? It’s amazing how many times I’ve imagined him in the role of Wolverine since he stopped playing Superman. Seeing it come to life brought me great joy!

In summary, despite being a huge Deadpool fan and overall enjoying the movie Deadpool & Wolverine, there were aspects that bothered me. Remarkably, the cameos weren’t among them, and I suspect this was true for numerous other viewers as well. MCU, pay attention—this is how to execute cameos effectively.

It’s possible that we’ll continue seeing similar cameos in future Marvel films, or perhaps this was just a lucky coincidence. Regardless, it leaves me eager for what Marvel has planned next – and who knows, maybe we’ll even get to see Deadpool joining the Avengers someday! Now wouldn’t that be something fun?
