'I Wanted You To Hear It From Me:' Kerry Washington Shares Candid Thoughts About Her Hulu Series Getting Canceled After Two Seasons

As a devoted gamer of the TV series universe, I must confess that it’s always a bittersweet feeling when the curtains close prematurely on a show that has captivated our hearts and minds. The sudden demise of Hulu’s UnPrisoned, much like the untimely end of my favorite character in an RPG, leaves me yearning for more adventures with Paige and Edwin Alexander.

It’s always disappointing for viewers when a TV show they’ve grown fond of suddenly comes to an end prematurely, as is the case with Hulu’s ‘UnPrisoned’, as actress Kerry Washington announced on her social media platforms last Friday.

The second season of “UnPrisoned” aired on television schedules during the summer of 2024, however, unfortunately, the eight episodes marked the conclusion of the storyline involving Paige and Edwin Alexander’s father-daughter relationship. Here is Washington’s heartfelt Instagram post announcing the news:

The actress and co-producer posted a delightful compilation from the set of ‘UnPrisoned’, filled with dancing, laughter, and John Stamos, accompanied by SZA’s “Snooze”. Accompanying the caption “Wrap on UnPrisoned”, she also included these words:

Unfortunately, our beloved series that we invested so much emotion and creativity into won’t be returning for another season. I wanted to personally share this news because despite our immense sadness, we are incredibly thankful. Producing this show was a heartfelt journey. We understand that The Alexander Family resonated with many of you, providing comfort and healing, and their influence will endure.

In March 2023, the show made its debut exclusively for Hulu subscribers and garnered overwhelming praise from both critics and viewers (as evidenced by its Rotten Tomatoes rating). Consequently, a second season followed suit, releasing episodes merely two months ago. The series centers around Paige Alexander (played by Washington), a marriage and family therapist who is also a single mother. Her life takes an unexpected turn when her father, Edwin (portrayed by Delroy Lindo), is released from prison after a seventeen-year sentence and decides to move in with Paige and her teenage son.

Kerry Washington’s first continuous series since “Scandal” ended in 2018 was “UnPrisoned,” although Tony Goldwyn expressed his desire to collaborate with her again. Washington has often considered quitting acting, but a script always manages to convince her otherwise. Here’s to hoping the cancellation of “UnPrisoned” doesn’t discourage her from returning to television, as we enjoy having her on our screens. Similarly, in her statement, she expressed her hope not to be dissuaded from TV work by this particular show’s cancellation.

We can’t express enough appreciation to our exceptional cast and crew – they are not only talented and dedicated, but a delight to collaborate with! A big thank you goes out to our fellow producers, writers, and directors for their leadership, guidance, and motivation. We are also grateful to ABCS, Hulu, and Onyx for providing us with a creative environment. But above all, we owe our deepest gratitude to YOU – for joining us in the ups and downs of each episode: laughing, crying, yelling, dancing, rolling your eyes, cheering (and everything in between)! It has been an incredible journey, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts ❤️

Regretfully, we must include UnPrisoned in our lineup of shows ending or being cancelled in 2024. This series is unfortunately joining a few others that the streaming service has decided to terminate this year, such as Life & Beth and Death and Other Details. Even though it’s being cancelled, you can still watch UnPrisoned at the moment.
