As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for comic book adaptations, I must admit that my anticipation for HBO’s upcoming DC series, The Penguin, has reached new heights. Colin Farrell‘s transformative performance and commitment to his role are truly commendable. The layers of prosthetics, the limp, and even the unexpected nude scene in episode 1 – it’s clear that no stone is left unturned in this portrayal.
How far is Colin Farrell prepared to go in order to make his performance as Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin) in the upcoming DC series authentic? To begin with, he wears multiple layers of prosthetics that dramatically alter his appearance from the charming Irish actor we’re accustomed to. He also walks with a limp, which is explained within the series and gives him the nickname “The Penguin.” Interestingly, during a press day for the HBO show, it was revealed that there’s more than just tailored suits hiding beneath The Penguin’s exterior.
I got the opportunity to speak with Colin Farrell and his Oscar-nominated makeup designer Michael Marino (The Penguin) about the work that they did on the series. Specifically, I wanted to ask about the design of Oz’s feet, which are part of the creation of his overall physical weaknesses. And then, out of nowhere, Farrell decided to add the following.

Consider this a little bit of a warning. Or a tease, depending on how you feel about Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell). But there’s a nude scene in Episode 1 of The Penguin, which will be available to those with a Max subscription beginning on Sept. 19. I won’t give you the details as to how and why we see Oz without his clothes on. But you do. It’s… something else.
Despite Colin Farrell mentioning that his character in Oz was “anatomically correct,” you don’t get to see his private parts. This is due to the fact that, during a jest with makeup artist Michael Marino, Farrell verified this detail.
In the design you created for my Penguin character, there was absolutely no flaw or imperfection regarding its beak. However, we didn’t film scenes involving that aspect of the character. Yet, I assure you, it was present, very much so! The character maintained a fully accurate anatomical representation.
They didn’t capture “Penguin Pecker” during the filming of the eight episodes of The Penguin. Thus, it won’t be included as a deleted scene or bonus feature. It was part of Farrell’s methodology, but it ultimately didn’t make it to the final version. Alternatively, you could say they didn’t include the scene depicting “circumcision” in the series.
The response to “The Penguin” series has been terrific thus far. At present, it boasts a higher Rotten Tomatoes rating than “The Batman,” the film that served as its inspiration. Our TV editor even prefers the Penguin character over Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman. However, Batman will have his time to shine in “The Batman: Part 2,” which won’t be released until October 2026. So, we’ve got a long wait ahead. Until then, gear up for the eight-episode run of The Penguin, airing from September to November, and it’s definitely worth your viewing time.
