‘I Was Stunned': Sigourney Weaver Remembers Getting The Script For Aliens After The First Movie's Success And Having An Intense Reaction

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the vast universe of gaming, I can confidently say that my experience with the Alien franchise is akin to leveling up in an epic RPG. The original Alien was the dark, claustrophobic dungeon crawl, full of tension and terror. But then came Aliens, a high-octane action adventure that took me on a rollercoaster ride through the cosmos.

In terms of sequels in Hollywood, there’s a common strategy among studios to stick with what worked before, offering “more of the same” following a successful premiere. This approach makes sense since follow-up movies are typically made based on audience approval. However, there’s one franchise that has consistently bucked this trend – the Alien series. This departure from the norm is clearly evident in Sigourney Weaver‘s reaction when she first read the script for James Cameron’s Aliens.

This week is proving to be a remarkable one for Weaver, as she was bestowed with the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. In a recent interview with Deadline, she looked back on her illustrious career and discussed her collaborations with directors Ridley Scott and James Cameron on the films ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens’. Weaver recalled that when she was working on another project, she received the script for ‘Aliens’, a groundbreaking science-fiction film, and was astounded by how distinct it was from ‘Alien’. As quoted, “I was taken aback by how unlike the first one it was.”

In France, where I was shooting, I remember getting the script for Aliens. This character seemed almost like an operatic role for Ridley Scott. The surprise was immense as it presented a stark contrast and offered a more robust, action-oriented take on the source material compared to what I had previously experienced.

More Aliens!

For the first time, I’ve been watching the Alien movies, and I initially believed that James Cameron’s Aliens wouldn’t measure up to the original. However, it turns out that my assumptions were mistaken.

Initially, it might have been assumed that Sigourney Weaver anticipated the sequel to Aliens as a conventional follow-up, where Ellen Ripley would once again be thrust into a harrowing predicament with the terrifying xenomorph (either one or multiple, as suggested by the title). However, she discovered that this wasn’t the case; instead, she was immersed in a unique narrative, collaborating with a team of space marines to address an emergency on a moon colony. In contrast to its predecessor’s horror-focused approach, Aliens proved to be an exceptionally thrilling action film.

In the 1980s, around mid-decade, Weaver was taken aback by the revolutionary approach to Aliens. However, she also expressed deep admiration for how the franchise elevated her to iconic status as a female lead in cinema. In her recent interview, she didn’t explicitly compare working with Ridley Scott and James Cameron, but she did acknowledge that none of her work in the Alien series (which includes Alien3 and Alien: Resurrection) left her feeling like she was just repeating herself. The actress put it simply.

The extraterrestrial entity is utterly flawless, it’s incredibly confining, terrifying, and disquieting. And while Alien is a gripping, cinematic masterpiece with an unconventional narrative, Aliens presents a larger-than-life action spectacle. Yet, comparing them as creators is challenging because they are fundamentally distinct. I can assert that each of the four directors I collaborated with on the Alien series – Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet – transformed the material according to their unique visions.

Indeed, the Alien series is quite popular at present, largely due to Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Covenant – a film that has garnered positive reviews from critics and dethroned Deadpool and Wolverine at the box office. Currently playing in theaters nationwide, if you fancy a trip down memory lane with the iconic installments of this cherished franchise led by Sigourney Weaver, all movies in the Alien film series can be streamed with a Hulu subscription.
