As a seasoned gamer with decades of comic book lore under my belt, I’ve witnessed the rise and fall of countless superhero universes. The arrival of Creature Commandos in the DC Universe has been a breath of fresh air.
Warning: mild SPOILERS for the first two episodes of Creature Commandos are ahead!
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that this week ushers in a fresh chapter for DC Comics media! The long-awaited debut of Creature Commandos graced our screens on the 2024 TV lineup, signaling the official birth of the new DC Universe. Replacing the DC Extended Universe, this new shared continuity promises exciting adventures ahead.
Do DC Newcomers Need To Watch Anything Else To Enjoy Creature Commandos?
In simpler terms, “Creature Commandos” is an excellent starting point for those new to DC movies or TV shows, as it features mostly new characters, with just a few connections to previous DC content. The characters Amanda Waller and Weasel are the only ones carried over from the DCEU at this time. I’ll elaborate more on those references later.
In simpler terms, the plot is clear and simple to understand. The Creature Commandos, headed by Rick Flag Sr., portrayed by Frank Grillo, are assigned to safeguard Princess Ilana Rostovic, heir to the throne of Pokolistan. The narrative then unfolds with Rick Flag Jr.’s confrontation against Circe, voiced by Anya Chalotra, who aspires to rule over her homeland, Themyscira. The storyline is straightforward, and while the initial episode serves as an introduction, subsequent episodes promise to explore the backstories of the Creature Commandos team members. For instance, the second episode will focus on the genesis of Indira Varma’s character, The Bride, who was specifically created for David Harbour’s character, Eric Frankenstein, to have a spouse.
What Do DC Newcomers Need To Watch To Fully Appreciate Creature Commandos?
To get the most out of the Creature Commandos, it’s recommended that you watch two series first: “The Suicide Squad” from 2021 and Season 1 of “Peacemaker,” which premiered in 2022. These productions were overseen by James Gunn, who currently heads DC Studios, wrote the entirety of Creature Commandos, and is also responsible for writing and directing the upcoming Superman remake. Consequently, most continuing elements from the DCEU originated from these projects (excluding the Justice League scene in “Peacemaker,” which no longer holds canonical status), with Xolo Maridueña being the only exception as he continues to portray Blue Beetle.
In the movie The Suicide Squad, we learn about Weasel’s harrowing tale and Rick Flag Sr.’s tragic loss of his son. Meanwhile, the U.S. government’s ban on using human prisoners for missions originates from Peacemaker Season 1. To fully understand these connections, you can stream both The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker on Max. Notably, Peacemaker Season 2 is set to air in 2025, following the debut of Superman on TV.
After I’ve explained everything to you, don’t forget to check out “Creature Commandos”, a show that our Sean O’Connell can’t get enough of, and keep coming back to TopMob for the latest news on the numerous upcoming DC movies and DC TV shows taking place in the DC Universe.
