As a cinephile who has devoted countless hours to exploring the vast and diverse landscape of film and television, I can confidently say that 2024 was a remarkable year for entertainment. The sheer volume and quality of content that graced our screens this past year were truly astounding, with standout titles spanning across various genres and platforms.
Just like my fellow team members at TopMob, I’ve immersed myself in countless movies from the 2024 film lineup and a multitude of TV series from the 2024 schedule over the past year. What stands out is that I’ve been devoting significant hours to gripping psychological thrillers, nail-biting espionage shows, and unforgettable experiences across various platforms, be it cinemas or top-tier streaming services.
To summarize, I’ve watched over 25 thrilling TV shows and movies in 2024. Although I’d love to discuss each one (regardless of how much I enjoyed them), for the sake of being concise, I’ll keep this brief and highlight 10 that I believe are worth watching. Here we go:
Disclaimer
It appears that not many people are utilizing their Apple TV+ subscription, which is unfortunate given the high-quality content it offers, such as the critically acclaimed series “Disclaimer,” directed by Alfonso Cuarón. This seven-episode thriller follows a documentarian (portrayed by Cate Blanchett) who must revisit her past after a terrible accident during a vacation. The narrative takes an intense turn when she is targeted by a vengeful father (Kevin Kline), determined to exact retribution, placing the woman at the heart of a storm that could potentially cost her everything.
Conclave
As a film enthusiast, let me tell you that Edward Berger’s “Conclave” was an extraordinarily intense, captivating, and exhilarating cinematic journey I haven’t experienced in ages. From the very first frame to the closing credits, two hours later, I found myself on the edge of my seat, utterly engrossed.
The Agency
In the latter part of 2024, The Agency, which was new to my Paramount+ subscription, swiftly emerged as one of the top shows I enjoyed. Adapted from the French show The Bureau, this gripping espionage drama stars Michael Fassbender as a CIA agent returning to everyday life after six years undercover. Initially, I formed an idea about the series’ trajectory based on the first two episodes, but it’s one of those productions that constantly alters the game as further secrets are unveiled.
Civil War
In simpler terms, Alex Garland’s film titled Civil War was overlooked for a Golden Globe nomination, leaving us puzzled. This gripping movie chronicling a group of journalists on their journey to Washington D.C. before the U.S. President is ousted was an unforgettable cinematic adventure for me. It’s definitely one of the top A24 productions so far, offering a politically neutral thriller that skillfully combines intensity, brutality, and intellect. The film masterfully explores themes of truth and who has the right to share it in a profoundly moving and concise manner. And let me tell you, there’s one scene I just can’t get out of my head since watching the movie.
The Day Of The Jackal
I regret delaying watching “The Day of the Jackal”, a fantastic Peacock original series, especially since it’s a gripping 10-episode thriller about a deadly sniper (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne) and a British intelligence agent (played by Lashana Lynch). This captivating cat-and-mouse chase took us on an exhilarating journey, leaving us with an intense and indelible impression. I can’t wait for Season 2 to arrive!
Rebel Ridge
Following the viewing of “Rebel Ridge”, I penned an analysis about how its ending broke typical action movie norms, and I still feel strongly about that assessment today. Jeremy Saulnier’s latest suspenseful drama, featuring Aaron Pierre as a former Marine attempting to free his cousin from rural Louisiana jail, delivers everything you would expect from the genre and more. This production offers tension, a compelling protagonist, an ominous antagonist portrayed by Don Johnson, and a narrative that consistently maintains a sense of believability and authenticity. If you’re searching for one of the top movies available on Netflix, I highly recommend giving this one a watch.
Woman Of The Hour
As a cinephile, I can’t help but express my awe for Netflix’s “Woman of the Hour”. This year, some have dubbed it as the scariest film, and rightly so. Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut was a chilling ride from beginning to end, with its narrative revolving around an aspiring actress confronting one of the most terrifying and disturbing serial killers of the 20th century. Daniel Zovatto’s portrayal of Rodney Alcala, also known as the “Dating Game Killer”, was so convincingly twisted that it leaves me uneasy to praise it.
Baby Reindeer
As a cinephile, I must confess that Baby Reindeer has undeniably earned a spot among my favorite thrillers in recent times. Despite its occasional foray into dark humor, the tale of a bartender (portrayed brilliantly by Richard Gadd) being pursued by an overzealous patron (Jessica Gunning) is as gripping as it is chilling. The series masterfully interweaves elements typical of the thriller genre, creating a suspenseful experience for viewers. Be prepared for some disquieting scenes as you delve into the haunting past of our protagonist, a caution I feel compelled to share.
Slow Horses
2024 saw the gripping fourth season of “Slow Horses” maintain its position as one of Apple TV+’s top original series, leaving me on the edge of my seat as I followed the Slough House team in their mission to prevent another impending disaster. If you’re already hooked on the show’s first three seasons, especially intrigued by River Cartwright’s (Jack Lowden) complex family dynamics, then this season will not disappoint. With Season 5 of “Slow Horses” set to premiere soon, there’s no better time than now to get up-to-date and prepare for the next exhilarating chapter!
Blink Twice
I regretted not catching Zoë Kravitz’s “Blink Twice” in cinemas, so I didn’t want to repeat that mistake when the film featuring Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie became available for streaming later on. This movie, set on a private island where things go awry very fast, offers a blend of humor (with its satirical take on the world) and terror at times. In fact, I found myself nervously biting my nails for almost two hours, which might suggest how engaging it was.
With the passing of the year, most significant movie and TV premieres have occurred, leaving us to anticipate the coming year now. Fortunately, we’re in for a treat as there are some exciting upcoming films slated for 2025, and the 2025 TV lineup is already shaping up to be impressive.
