I Watched The Merry Gentlemen, And Now I’m Even More Confused About The Netflix Christmas Universe

As a seasoned Netflix holiday movie enthusiast and connoisseur of the intricate web that is the Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe (NCCU), I must express my disappointment with the latest addition, “The Merry Gentlemen.” While I was initially thrilled about the prospect of combining the sultry allure of “Magic Mike” with the heartwarming charm of traditional holiday romances, I found myself more bewildered than enchanted by the movie’s baffling incorporation of the NCCU.

The upcoming Netflix Christmas lineup is generating buzz, particularly with the release of the movie “The Merry Gentlemen” starring Chad Michael Murray. While viewers seem to be enjoying it, critics have mixed opinions about this spicy holiday film. I was intrigued by the idea of blending the seductive charm of “Magic Mike” with the traditional warmth expected in romance movies during the holidays. However, I found myself often distracted throughout the movie due to its puzzling integration of the Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe into the plotline.

For people unfamiliar, the Netflix Holiday Film Universe was established in 2018 and resembles Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Characters often seen watching popular Netflix Christmas movies during their leisure time are a common occurrence – for example, Lacey Chabert’s character from Hot Frosty was once spotted enjoying Lindsay Lohan’s Falling for Christmas. Additionally, characters may appear or get referenced in films, similar to the royal holiday movies that Netflix regularly releases.

In contrast to many films which maintain a single type of connection due to their interwoven nature, The Merry Gentlemen appeared to relish in deviating from this pattern. Although it was enjoyable to spot two movies referenced within the Christmas-themed male revue, this connection doesn’t quite align with what we understand about the connected universe of the film.

Ashley Unwinds By Watching A Christmas Prince On Netflix

The Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe makes its debut during the first instance when Ashley (Britt Robertson) watches “A Christmas Prince” at her New York residence, having just lost her cherished job. Notably, this scene takes place as one of the most romantic moments in the movie unfolds, where Prince Richard invites American magazine journalist Amber Moore to dance with him for the first time.

Events unfold within the initial ten minutes of the movie, setting a potential new pace for the speed at which the Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe is established.

The Princess Switch’s Prince And Princess Of Belgravia Have Visited The Rhythm Room

A short while passes, and fans discover their second Easter Egg from NCCU as Ashley peruses the images on the walls and old newspaper articles at her family’s cherished music venue, The Rhythm Room.

Instead of rushing through, the camera lingers for a moment or two on an article featuring Prince Edward (Sam Palladio) and Princess Stacy (Vanessa Hudgens), who are posing outside the venue. You’ll recognize them as they are the beloved commoner-royal pair from Netflix’s popular trilogy The Princess Switch.

But Based On The Existing Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe, This Doesn’t Make Sense

Instead of incorporating these two Easter Eggs, which are enjoyable, it disrupts our understanding of NCCU. If The Merry Gentlemen intended to add two references linking to other holiday films, it would be more appropriate if they chose two that aren’t interconnected already.

Of course, any devoted fan of Netflix Christmas movies recognizes that the monarchs from “A Christmas Prince” and “The Princess Switch” have crossed paths numerous times across all the sequels within each series.

As a gamer, it strikes me as odd that “A Christmas Prince” would exist in Ashley’s fictional world when the actual Prince and Princess of Belgravia are known to have had real-life interactions with Ashley’s family. It seems more fitting for both characters or both stories to be part of the official canon, or to have their own movies instead.

To maintain the authenticity of the NCCU (Netflix Cinematic Universe), they ought to enhance their ability in pairing movies coherently. Thankfully, many Netflix subscribers watching The Merry Gentlemen aren’t likely to be bothered by minor inconsistencies. However, as a devoted fan of the NCCU, I find myself constantly pondering over this issue.
