Ian McShane Refused To Watch The John Wick Prequel Series, Says He And Lance Reddick Had Their Own Idea That Was ‘Much More Interesting’

Building franchises can be a complex endeavor, as ensuring consistency across sequels, spin-offs, and other installments is just one challenge. With numerous creative minds contributing, disagreements may arise when individual visions don’t align perfectly. For instance, Ian McShane has yet to watch the “John Wick” prequel series “The Continental,” as he hasn’t endorsed how the writers handled the backstory of his character, Winston Scott.

During a recent interview with Hannah Saulic at TopMob’s press day for the upcoming film, Ballerina, I shared some insights about my collaboration with the late Lance Reddick. In our movie, he plays Charon in the Ana de Armas-led production, and this is his final performance. Lance and I had a rich backstory in mind for our characters, detailing how they initially crossed paths and formed a friendship. To put it simply, we didn’t just act out our scenes; we brought our characters’ friendship to life from a shared history that only the two of us knew.

From the very onset, it was clear where this tale was headed – our initial conversation set the stage. It struck me, and I believe him too, that these two protagonists had a history rooted in public service. He, operating clandestinely from Africa, perhaps for the CIA, and I, serving with MI5. Their paths crossed over the years due to their shared governmental background.

Once their government careers reached an end, it was only natural that they’d transition into the private sector.

It seems likely that neither Winston Scott nor Charon led saintly lives during their youth, but for Ian McShane and Lance Reddick, these characters were individuals who dedicated themselves to serving their nation. Once their military service ended, they chose to apply their unique talents elsewhere – they transitioned into the realm of professional assassins and rose through the ranks, eventually achieving significant status and influence at the Continental Hotel in New York.

Contrary to the narrative depicted in the prequel series The Continental, which premiered on Peacock in late 2023, the backstory of Winston Scott as portrayed there is not one that Ian McShane endorses. In fact, he strongly disagrees with this depiction and has made it clear that he has no intention of watching it. He further expressed his stance by stating…

As a movie critic, I must confess that I chose not to watch the prequel TV series revolving around our favorite characters due to a premise that, quite frankly, left me underwhelmed. It seemed to stray far from the captivating intrigue that originally drew us in. To my discerning eye, the characters were portrayed as common criminals, which felt incongruous given their complex backgrounds and the sophistication they’ve demonstrated throughout their journey. In my professional opinion, those with expertise honed through years of espionage and devious dealings do not find solace in a life of petty crime once they exit government service. Instead, they navigate the murky waters of private enterprise.

It seems that both Ian McShane and Lance Reddick, who played Winston and Charon respectively, found common ground when it came to their background in espionage for the filming of John Wick. However, according to Ian McShane, they had vastly different viewpoints regarding their participation in the iconic action scenes within the movie.

The characters’ actions were constantly in our minds. While Lance was always eager to join the action, he made his move at position three. And they would often ask me… I replied, ‘Absolutely not! I have no interest in fighting, thank you. No, no, never. Winston is a romantic, not a warrior, if you don’t mind.’

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t wait to catch Ian McShane reprising his role as Winston Scott this weekend, not in a fight but with love, as “Ballerina” graces cinema screens nationwide. The star-studded cast boasts several veterans from the “John Wick” series, including McShane, Reddick, Keanu Reeves, and Anjelica Huston. Keep an eye out here on TopMob for in-depth coverage of this upcoming release, with more exclusive insights from the film’s stars coming soon!
