Ian Somerhalder on Why He Walked Away From Acting

As a devoted fan of Ian Somerhalder, I must say his life journey is truly inspiring. From his early days on Lost to his stellar performance as Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries, he has captivated audiences worldwide. Yet, what sets him apart isn’t just his acting prowess but his unwavering commitment to making a difference off-screen.

Ian Somerhalder is reflecting on walking away from acting.

In an interview with People, published on Monday, the star of The Vampire Diaries shared his reasons for taking a break from acting to focus on personal passions. This revelation coincides with the 15th anniversary of The CW series and the 20th anniversary of Lost, both of which he was part of.

August 19 marks five years since I last appeared on camera as an actor/producer. After wrapping up ‘V Wars’, I chose to focus on building my companies and releasing projects like ‘Kiss the Ground’, ‘Common Ground’ and ‘Ground Swell’. I recall having conversations with my management about this, expressing, ‘This is the only thing that has consistently supported my family, and yet I am walking away from it at a time when I could have continued to do anything, but these partnerships hold greater value for me.’

In a modest and considerate manner, I express that I’d prefer this option over spending two months in a city for a TV series, leaving my family behind or constantly traveling them to and fro.” Paul Wesley is married to actress Nikki Reed. They became parents to a daughter in 2017 and a son in 2023.

Ian Somerhalder attributes his enthusiasm for environmental conservation to the time he spent working on the Fox television show, “Lost.

“I got to work on a lot of reef conservation. I got to work on a lot of soil and water conservation even there,” he explained. “This is 2004. I was already doing this. My voice just wasn’t as big. Cut to 2005, [I] left Lost, which was humbling. And then very beginning of 2009 came Vampire Diaries. And that was a rocket ship. Initially, it was a very, very, very young audience, but that audience matured, and it got bigger and bigger.”

During the livestream, Somerhalder pointed out that the TV series on The CW, which spanned eight seasons, has reached a staggering audience of approximately 1.2 billion people worldwide. This massive viewership has allowed fans to become acquainted with his work, not just in front of the camera, but behind it as well.

He pointed out, “If you calculate those figures, you might pause for a moment to consider this. With approximately 8 billion people on Earth, it means around one-eighth of the global population has encountered this IP, this story in some way. They’ve been impacted by it, either directly or indirectly. This presents an unprecedented platform. So, if you can connect your expertise and enthusiasm for me, specifically animal welfare and soil health regeneration on a massive scale, the potential impact could be significant.

He feels “enormous gratitude” for Lost and The Vampire Diaries given the “path has gotten me to where I feel most authentic anyway, which is in a pair of cowboy boots, feeding the cows and running horses.”

When you attain a particular point, you find yourself saying, ‘Now, I wish to concentrate on my family and the advancement of agriculture, food production, and energy – the major aspects.’ Pursuing accolades and recognition is no longer necessary for personal validation.

One of Ian Somerhalder’s ventures is a collaboration with his Vampire Diaries co-star Paul Wesley on Brother’s Bond Bourbon, which debuted in 2021. Their brand has been rapidly expanding and is now among the fastest-growing whiskey brands in the nation, as reported by Whisky Advocate.
