As a lifestyle expert with an eye for captivating narratives, I must say that IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack has undeniably caught my attention. On August 29, 2024, Anubhav Sinha’s IC: 814 – The Kandahar Hijack, starring Vijay Varma, debuted on Netflix. This limited series has attracted much interest and received exceptional praise from viewers and critics alike. In a recent interview, the flight’s captain, Devi Sharan, recounted his harrowing ordeal, admitting that he was willing to crash the plane in Lahore, Pakistan if necessary. The series is based on Captain Devi Sharan’s book Flight Into Fear, which served as the basis for its Netflix adaptation.
Back in 2001, I found myself in an unthinkable scenario as a terrified captain on board a hijacked plane. In an exclusive interview with CNN, I vividly recalled the chilling demands made by the hijackers: they wanted me to steer our aircraft towards Pakistan. However, when their request was denied, I had no choice but to redirect our flight to Amritsar instead.
Upon arriving at Lahore Airport, the runway lights were extinguished and the runway was shut down due to lack of fuel. Faced with a potential crash landing, Sharan commented, “I made it to Lahore, but everything was closed. The airport runway was closed, leaving me no choice but to land the plane without enough fuel to return to Amritsar. All I could do was prepare for an emergency landing.”
Even though Captain Sharan initially intended to make the plane crash, he altered his decision upon noticing people below. The scenario took a drastic turn when Pakistani airport officials, sensing the immediate risk, approved the landing authorization at the last minute.
