As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating world of cinema and television, I can confidently say that Idris Elba is undeniably one of the most versatile and captivating actors of our time. His journey from the streets of London to the silver screen is nothing short of extraordinary, a testament to his unwavering dedication and talent.
Idris Elba, the well-known actor hailing from London and recognized for his roles in “The Wire” and “Luther”, has been announced to star in an upcoming TV series titled “Things Fall Apart“. This project is being developed jointly by A24 and Elba himself, with executive production handled by both Idris Elba and Gina Carter through their studio, 22Summers. Yoruba Saxon, a production company led by David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka, will also contribute to the show. The series is set to be brought to life by Ben Forkner and Dayo Ogunyemi in collaboration with Achebe Masterworks, based on the widely acclaimed 1958 novel.
According to Variety’s latest update, the creative team (writer and director) for this project remains unconfirmed, and its broadcasting platform (streaming service or network) is yet to be decided. Notably, past television series from A24 such as “Euphoria”, “Beef”, “The Curse”, and “The Sympathizer” have aired on HBO, Netflix, and Showtime respectively, garnering widespread critical acclaim.
In a new adaptation, the novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe will be brought to life. The tale revolves around Okonkwo, a powerful and respected warrior within the Igbo community in pre-colonial Nigeria, who is portrayed by Idris Elba. As European colonialism and Christianity gradually intrude upon Igboland, Okonkwo’s unwavering strength is put to the test as these foreign forces disrupt their traditional way of life and challenge their identity. Previous adaptations of this literary classic have been made in a 1971 film and a 1987 miniseries, both produced in Nigeria under the same title.
Things Fall Apart Has Left a Lasting Legacy
The legacy of the book is unquestionable, as it’s been hailed as one of the greatest African novels of all time. Many say it was the first time African communities were explored as more than just secondary characters against the backdrop of colonialism, and the novel was incredibly influential to other African writers who saw Achebe as an innovator in giving Africans a proper voice and breaking the barriers that had previously only ever seen them as savages. Things Fall Apart is now listed as one of “12 Novels Considered the ‘Greatest Book Ever Written'” by Encyclopædia Britannica.
52-year-old actor, who gained fame through films such as Beasts of No Nation, The Dark Tower, Molly’s Game, and The Suicide Squad, started his career on TV in the mid-1990s. His early roles in British series like The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, The Governor, and Dangerfield paved the way for the performance that would transform his life: portraying Stringer Bell, a criminal mastermind, in HBO’s The Wire.
After appearing in series such as ‘Luther’, ‘The Big C’ (the American version), and ‘The Office’, Elba continued to act until he secured the part of Sam Nelson in the suspenseful drama ‘Hijack’. This role earned him an Emmy Award nomination, which was also bestowed upon him for his portrayal as DCI John Luther, as well as his guest appearance on ‘The Big C’.
