10 years have passed since Rana accompanied Piku and her peculiar old father on an unforgettable road trip from Delhi to Kolkata. To celebrate the film’s anniversary, Shoojit Sircar’s beloved drama “Piku” is coming back to theaters this week. In a recent interview, Sircar reminisced about the movie’s journey and jokingly suggested that if Deepika Padukone’s character Piku and Irrfan Khan’s Rana weren’t romantically involved, they would still be just a phone call away from each other.
In a chat with Screen, director Shoojit Sircar reminisced about the finale of Piku, stating that his original concept involved Piku and Rana playing a friendly game of badminton as they bonded instead of getting married. Now, he’s certain that their characters would not have tied the knot in the end.
As Sircar explained, Piku could always reach out to Rana whenever she needed him, even if she had dated other people in the past. Sircar thought it was unlikely that Rana would pursue relationships with others. He envisioned a scenario where Piku adopted a son and brought Rana into the picture as the child’s mentor in civil engineering. With a smile, he jokingly added that the family’s tradition of constipation might be passed down to the son.
Shoojit Sircar admitted that he frequently suggested to Juhi Chaturvedi (the writer) and Ronnie Lahiri (the producer) to consider Deepika Padukone for the role of Piku, even before the script was fully developed.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged harboring reservations about her willingness to star in a movie revolving around an unusual subject like constipation. Meanwhile, Deepika consistently stood out among other potential candidates in his thoughts.
In the end, he chose to seize the moment and shared with her a concise five-minute storyline, enacting the initial scene too. To his astonishment, Deepika promptly consented, expressing excitement and stating that she was ready to join the project without having read the entire script first.
Sircar pondered over the decision to cast Deepika in a character distinct from her past roles characterized by glamour, acknowledging that he had long perceived an earthy, neighborly charm within her.
Regarding her ‘diva’ persona, there was a genuine innocence that shone through in her expressions and behavior, evident even in her first film Om Shanti Om. Her facial structure and overall presence reminded him of someone from Bengal, and when she donned the bindi for Piku, it all became clear to him.
