The Fall of Avalon could be a good choice. Although we don’t have a review yet, Khee Hoon Chan praised Questline’s previous game, Tainted Grail: Conquest, as one of the best games you might have missed in 2021. Currently, The Fall of Avalon enjoys an Overwhelmingly Positive Steam user consensus as it nears its departure from early access. The Steam page also offers a demo, along with a trailer showcasing first-person spellcasting, shattered cosmic castles, and fishing mechanics.
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon – Release Date Trailer
The tale of Avalon’s Decline unfolds within an alternative portrayal of the Arthurian legend, one devoid of beauty influencers as abundant as those found in Tides Of Annihilation. This story transpires approximately six centuries after King Arthur’s downfall, in a world marred by “perpetual conflict” and afflicted by disease, separated into three distinct regions.
The game is estimated to last between 50 to 70 hours, featuring over 200 side missions and various additional tasks including decorating your home, farming, and what appears to be a drawing or journaling feature in the style of an art book or photography system – I really hope it’s a detailed illustration mini-game or at least a fantasy drawing/photography mechanic. Let’s pray for more digital paradises like Eastshade!
One key concept is that the world becomes more troublesome at night due to an increase in the manifestation of the Wyrdness, described as a chaotic, ancient force. Personally, I often feel the effects of my own Wyrdness at night, which usually stems from indulging in a large bag of Flaming Hot Wotsits. However, the Wyrdness in The Fall Of Avalon has a more serious and historical origin. According to legend, King Arthur had expelled it from Avalon centuries ago during his campaigns, but now it’s returned with a fierce resurgence.
Lucky for Avalon, you are a versatile RPG character who can eliminate wyrds in various ways, mixing and matching stats, skills, and gear. The Steam description assures, “Fancy yourself as a wild alchemist-berserker, pummeling foes to the ground? Go ahead!” It also hints at a mystical blacksmith-mage summoning an army of the undead. For those who prefer a covert approach, an elusive archer skulking in the shadows, this game is tailored just for you. Shed tears, Thief!
I don’t find myself particularly excited about everything I’ve come across regarding the game. The term “mature, morally grey story” is akin to kids trying to cover up their dishonesty with flowery words. When you consider this along with the standard industry jargon such as “endless gameplay options”, “significant decisions”, and “letters of affection” that are reminiscent of the Elder Scrolls-style RPG genre, I’m not expecting much novelty overall.
Still, I find myself appreciating the central concept of “eternal autumn” in the art direction, and I’m drawn to the environment design that carries a hint of the style found in FromSoftware games. Oh, and by the way, there’s a disease known as the Red Death running rampant. A group of priests are trying to find a cure through grueling experiments on victims who are gradually mutating into monsters. Now, this might just be the Flaming Hot Cheetos talking, but it seems like an intriguing choice for an evening game session. If you’ve played it and have some thoughts to share, feel free!
