As a long-time film enthusiast who’s attended more film festivals than I can count on one hand, let me tell you that the 2025 Rotterdam Film Festival lineup is nothing short of a cinematic adventure! The global diversity and unique selection of films in both the Big Screen and Tiger Short Competitions promise an exhilarating journey through various cultures, stories, and techniques.
On Tuesday, the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) revealed its 2025 Big Screen and Tiger Short competitive categories. As always, Rotterdam’s selection reflects a global perspective, featuring films that originate in diverse locations, ranging from Montenegro to Malaysia, and from Congo to India.
The Big Screen Competition showcases a mix of art-house and mainstream films. Notable entries include “The Assistant” by Polish filmmakers Anka and Wilhelm Sasnal, who previously had their work “It Looks Pretty from a Distance” in the Tiger competition at Rotterdam in 2012. Also featured is “Bad Painter,” starring Udo Kier, directed by Albert Oehlen, and “Yasuko, Songs of Days Past,” a Japanese drama by Negishi Kichitaro.
At the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 2025, Cate Blanchett, an Oscar-winning actress, and Guy Maddin, a pioneering Canadian filmmaker, are scheduled to participate. They will take part in discussions as part of the festival’s IFFR Talks program, focusing on their recent joint project titled “Rumours.” Other talks include a chat with Lol Crawley, the cinematographer for “The Brutalist,” who won the IFFR’s Robby Müller lifetime achievement award. Additionally, a dialogue between filmmakers Cheryl Dunye and Albertina Carri will be held, where they will delve into the theme of radical queerness in cinema.
The 54th International Film Festival Rotterdam begins on January 30 with “Fabula,” a dark comedy directed by Michiel ten Horn from the Netherlands. The festival concludes on February 9 with “This City Is a Battlefield,” an epic historical film by Indonesian director Mouly Surya, which showcases great ambition.
