'I’m A F—ing Jedi!’ Samuel L. Jackson Walks Fans Through The First Day On A Star Wars Set And He’s Like A Kid In A Candy Shop

As a die-hard Star Wars fan with memories of watching the original trilogy in the darkest corners of my childhood basement, I can only imagine the sheer excitement that must have coursed through Samuel L. Jackson when he was cast as Mace Windu. The man who brought Jules Winnfield to life, a character known for his cool demeanor and quick wit, found himself in a galaxy far, far away, playing a wise and powerful Jedi Master – not just any Jedi, but one who shared scenes with the legendary Yoda himself!

George Lucas, in his creation of the pioneering Star Wars, could hardly have foreseen the colossal phenomenon he was unleashing. The film ignited the creative sparks of a whole generation, and continues to do so for generations yet to come. Today, we see numerous Star Wars movies and TV series in the pipeline, but earlier installments were more infrequent. When the announcement of a prequel trilogy was made, it’s fair to say that excitement doesn’t even begin to describe the reaction, not just from the fans, but also from the cast, such as Samuel L. Jackson.

Many stars just wanted to be part of Lucas’ new Star Wars movies in some way, including Samuel L. Jackson. Looking back on the experience with GQ, the former Mace Windu reveals that when it came time to film his first scenes, he didn’t even know what role he was playing. He just got on a plane and showed up, finding out details as he went along. Jackson said…

I’m taking a peek around, and I see some boots and a robe here. I can’t help but wonder whose dressing room this might be. Then someone enters and hands me some lines, about four pages worth. It seems like this character is Mace Windu, as there’s no one else talking but him and Yoda around here. So, it looks like I’ll be playing the role of Mace Windu, since he’s a friend of Yoda’s. Quite exciting!

Back in the days of filming The Phantom Menace, keeping secrets about major movie franchises wasn’t as widespread as it is today. However, it’s still unusual for an actor to show up on set without having seen a script or knowing the character they were portraying. Even after Samuel L. Jackson discovered his character was Mace Windu, he had no clue who this character was beyond someone who converses with Yoda.

It wasn’t until Samuel L. Jackson began donning his costume that he discovered he was portraying a Jedi, at which point he became genuinely thrilled. Any true Star Wars fan would go insane with excitement at the prospect of becoming a genuine Jedi in a Star Wars film, and Samuel L. Jackson was no different. He proceeded…

Afterward, they enter the room and begin equipping me with these items. I decide to put on my boots, slip one foot into it, and exclaim, “Am I a Jedi now?” To which they respond affirmatively. I then head downstairs where another person approaches me with a Haliburton case, opens it to reveal what appears to be lightsaber handles. I can’t help but utter an exclamation of surprise, and they instruct me to choose one. Overwhelmed with excitement, I select the one that catches my eye, attach it to my belt, and feel a surge of exhilaration as I realize, “I’m a Jedi now!

It’s likely that the lightsaber handle will eventually bear an inscription inspired by Samuel L. Jackson, much like Mace Windu’s distinctive purple lightsaber. The tale behind this customization request from Jackson to George Lucas is quite famous. At first, Lucas was reluctant but eventually granted Jackson’s wish. It seems that Jackson lived out a fantasy with this entire experience, from start to finish. You can read his full remarks below.

Samuel L. Jackson has expressed a desire to portray Mace Windu once more, considering the ending of his character in the Star Wars prequels leaves room for speculation about his survival. Although there hasn’t been significant enthusiasm around this idea, the prequels have undergone reappraisal in recent times, and their reception is not as negative as it used to be. It’s likely that Samuel L. Jackson would jump at the chance to wield the lightsaber again.
