I’m Excited Bluey Is Finally Getting A Movie, But There's Some Bittersweet News As Well

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of Bluey, I find myself both elated and saddened by the latest news from the Heeler family. The announcement of a feature-length movie is undeniably exciting, especially considering the talent behind it and the heartwarming stories we’ve come to love. However, the bittersweet revelation that creator Joe Brumm may not be returning for Season 4 leaves me with a sense of uncertainty and nostalgia.

2024 saw a peak in Bluey fever, but as the year winds down, there’s more excitement on the horizon. Following a hardware store makeover and a dedicated theme park, the beloved TV series has been expanding with both lengthy and brief episodes. Now, the Heeler family is set to appear on the big screen! No need to call in the Grannies for pressure this time.

I regret to inform you that while there is good news on the horizon, it’s accompanied by a piece of information that might not sit well with some.

According to recent announcements, both BBC and Disney are working on a film set for release in 2027. This upcoming movie is titled “Bluey” and is penned and directed by its creator, Joe Brumm. In a heartfelt message shared within the press release, Brumm shared some insights about the origin of the movie idea. After its run in theaters, you’ll be able to stream it with a Disney+ subscription. To quote Brumm himself:

After taking a break from the series for a different project, an earlier concept unexpectedly re-emerged, leading me to pen a Bluey feature film script that I’m particularly fond of. Following a flurry of contract negotiations, we are now gearing up to create an animated Bluey movie!

While specifics about the movie’s storyline remain unknown, what we do have is the exciting news that the cherished voice actors from Bluey are set to return. Moreover, it has been announced that the upcoming feature-length project will be helmed by Joe Brumm, who expressed in a recent statement his inspiration stemming from the extended episode length of “The Sign.” It appears he shares the sentiment with many fans, including myself, who believe Bluey benefits from a longer runtime.

And Now For Bluey’s Bad News

Initially, I shared some disappointing information in this tale, and then came an unforeseen disclosure from Brumm. According to what he’s revealed in the statement below, at this point, he doesn’t have any plans to rejoin Bluey for Season 4. This could potentially signify the conclusion of his involvement with the series.

I’ve always pledged to stop producing the TV series if I can’t ensure each new season is as good or better than the last. With potential Season 4, this would have been the case for me. Therefore, I’m stepping back from the show for a while. If I find myself unable to continue making seasons on my own, “The Sign” will serve as the TV ending for Bluey. This doesn’t mean the show is ending, but rather that my focus will shift towards the film.

It’s hard to envision Bluey without Joe Brumm steering the ship, primarily because we’ve never witnessed what the show might be like without him. Perhaps, just perhaps, we’ll still see that anticipated crossover with The Simpsons, although I can’t say for certain if Brumm was a factor in making it happen or not. Given the numerous Bluey references to one of the greatest animated shows ever made, I’d wager the chances were stronger with him involved in the production process.

Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that although Brumm has stated he won’t contribute to Season 4 due to his film commitments, there might be a chance he could draw further inspiration during the break leading up to the movie’s release, potentially leading him back to Bluey. Predicting the exact outcome can be tricky as fans not in the know may not notice any difference with Brumm absent. So, it would be wise to observe how Season 4 unfolds before jumping to conclusions, especially if this is indeed Brumm’s preference.

2027 is when the “Bluey” film will be released. Until then, you can enjoy three whole seasons of the original show and don’t forget to catch up on the entertaining mini-episodes too!
