‘I’m Gonna Be Transparent’: The Acolyte Star Amandla Sternberg Reacts To Cancelation Of Star Wars’ Series

As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the cancellation of “The Acolyte” on Disney+ is indeed disappointing, especially given its unique and intriguing premise set within the expansive Star Wars universe. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge the perspective of those involved in the production, particularly Amandla Stenberg who faced a barrage of online hate that seems unjustified, to say the least.

The Star Wars spin-off show titled The Acolyte was taken off Disney+’s schedule following its debut in June 2024, due to lower-than-expected audience ratings and viewership being cited as the main cause of its cancellation.

Approximately a week after the decision was made, Amandla Sternberg, who played Osha in the early episodes, stated that she wasn’t surprised by the news. Additionally, the actress spoke out about the online harassment that occurred following the debut of season 1.

The actress shared a detailed 10-part post on her Instagram account, explaining why the show was canceled. In her statement, she admitted that the cancellation wasn’t entirely unexpected due to the intense backlash the show had received since its announcement.

She emphasized, “At some stage, it became undeniable for me that to remain true to myself, I needed to uphold my personal values by speaking out, even while employed at Disney and contributing to the expansive Star Wars franchise.”

In his acting career, Sternberg not only played the character Osha but also portrayed Mae, her twin. These two characters eventually became adversaries following their separation during childhood and experiencing distinctly different environments while growing up.

The story of the series is set 100 years before the events of Star Wars. The synopsis of the show read, “A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes but discovers the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.”

Speaking candidly about the online harassment encountered by the team behind The Acolyte, Sternberg stated, “We found ourselves subjected to a wave of intense conservative intolerance, malicious remarks, biased prejudice, and hostile speech aimed at us.”

The text continues by stating that the experience of getting the job had a profound impact on them, as they had expected it but didn’t truly grasp the emotions involved until they actually went through it themselves.

Back in June, when someone inquired whether the blueprint for Season 2 was set by the series creator, Leslye Headland, she admitted that no details had been disclosed yet.

The first season of The Acolyte is available to stream on Disney+.
