One engaging facet of a Saturday Night Live season that never fails to amuse is the annual joke exchanges between Colin Jost and Michael Che. During these swaps, which typically occur around holidays, they write jokes for each other to read on-air without prior knowledge of what the other has prepared. This year’s swap was especially harsh as Jost had to make some bold statements about his wife, Scarlett Johansson, who happened to be offstage at the time. With SNL making a comeback in the 2025 TV schedule, Jost is now sharing Scarlett Johansson’s genuine response to these jokes.
In this particular segment, Colin Jost found himself delivering his humor using a style reminiscent of Black vernacular. He made a comment about Scarlett Johansson’s recent 40th birthday, saying something like “I’m about to get up out of here,” implying it was time for her to move on. Jokingly, he also mentioned their son Cosmo, stating that the public hadn’t seen his picture yet because he was as dark as night. Furthermore, during a discussion about Costco discontinuing its roast beef sandwich, Jost was compelled to say that he had been consuming roast beef every evening since his wife gave birth to their child.
Scarlett Johansson appeared amusingly surprised by those remarks, and this week, her spouse graced the stage on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” During the show, he was inquired about the jokes. Specifically, Fallon asked the co-star of “Coming 2 America” if there were any marital issues because of the comments. In a YouTube video, the host of “Weekend Update” humorously shared his candid thoughts on the matter.
It seems I’ve found myself in an awkward situation, as many people appear to be taken aback. Scarlett, however, was genuinely astonished. This is because the events unfolded unexpectedly for me, yet they had warned her that Michael might make a humorous reference about a female body part at some point. She seemed nonchalant and agreed, but I didn’t anticipate what followed. Later, during the [Costco] segment, the context became clear to Scarlett when a graphic appeared, leaving her exclaiming, “Oh my god, that’s what it is!” backstage.
Colin Jost insisted that his genuine shock was not an act, claiming he’s not that skilled at acting. Given his history of occasionally poking fun at his wife, one might assume he’d grown accustomed to it. However, a prank in 2024 involving a voice assistant mimicking Scarlett Johansson’s voice proved him wrong. Despite the joke swaps, Weekend Update guests often incorporate Johansson jokes in subtle ways. Here’s the latest example:
In essence, these exchanges appear to be friendly banter without any personal implications. Michael Che pushes so aggressively during these segments because viewers need to perceive him as genuinely attempting to embarrass his co-star. Colin Jost has also improved at setting Che up for comedic mishaps. Scarlett Johansson seems to possess a good sense of humor, and if we’re being honest, she could tease Jost mercilessly if given the opportunity, perhaps referencing his extravagant Ferry purchase.
I don’t see any planned joke swaps coming up soon, but mark your calendars! This Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET, tune in to NBC as Timothée Chalamet takes the stage as both host and musical guest for SNL Season 50. Don’t forget, you can catch the episode with a Peacock subscription too!
